Basically, her older sister was very nearsighted and was prescribed glasses as a kid.

Well, it turns out both the girls were very nearsighted.

But when she started saying that she didn't see well, her parents screamed at her and accused her of wanting glasses just because her older sister had them.

So she had to go through school without being able to see on the blackboard.

Apparently, it took years before the parents realized that it was real that she needed glasses. They were just completely stuck to the idea that she just wanted glasses because she thought they were cool and because her sister had them.
