My school banned items because they didn't want you to bring things to school and then have them lost or stolen. So pretty much anything collectable was a no go.

My elementary school had a pokemon ban after one kid had a card stolen. Not even just a ban on the cards; we weren't even allowed to say the word "pokemon" or we'd get detention.

A sidenote is that Swedish satellite TV airs from UK in order to bypass the stricter Swedish advertising laws. One of these channels aired the cartoon, so it got censored in Sweden as well.
But the episodes that were released on VHS were uncensored, so both versions were released in Sweden.

Even in the U.S., the cartoon went out of its way to avoid showing violence. Like, obviously there was a little bit but for the most part it was pretty slapstick

We had a teacher who flipped out over Gameboys. We were going on a field trip, and the one teacher was basically just telling us if you bring a discman, laptop, Gameboy, etc. to be careful with it so it doesn't get lost/stolen. As soon as he uttered the word "Gameboy" the other teacher interrupted him and lost her shit at idea of kids playing Gameboys on the bus.
