Eh. I know Kata and Hira currently. Its not anime at this point. It's more that I just want to further my knowledge in a language I have a little grasp of.

Already did. Two classes, but 102 was ruined because my instructor wouldn't leave the damn partnering up alone. I learned outside of class and it never stuck with me for that reason.

I have a friend who would be more than happy to help me if I ever were to fall behind. I feel like I have a little head start though. Numbers, colors, those two alphabets, a few kanji, various terms. I am not proficient, but I'm not bad going in right now.

Yeah, I don't really need to. The cool thing is, I can look at hira and kata and just go with the flow sometimes (Though I get Chi and Sa mixed up in Hira)..... but when told to write them, I need to refresh myself, but I know them, you know? Like I am playing a game in pure Japanese and I can read the kana just fine of what they are and even research their meanings on google. Just telling me to write "re" in say, Katakana? I at this moment forget it. If I saw it, I'd know it though.

I can still. I'd need to take 102 all over again though.

Partnering up sucked because fucking people who were fluent in Spanish took it for easy As. I was partnered up with fluent speakers and with them calling out all these answers, knowing the exercises so easily and so on, I felt so behind in the class and it moved through too damn fast.

It wasn't fair.

this is a pretty common thing, it's generally easier to recognize something than to generate it. Understanding a language you're learning is usually a lot easier than speaking/writing it. Also related is most people having a much bigger passive vocabulary than active vocabulary

I'd like to believe I read Japanese at a pretty decent level by now.

However I have never actually spoken it aloud, weird as that may be. I only really cared about reading.

TC, "Japanese the Manga Way" is a really good book for basic grammar. Title will remind you of those dumb "Learn to draw anime" books but its a really good resource

Also Anki for vocab.

I've done all self-study, I can definitely see what you mean though by a classroom setting helping. I'd still check out some other resources on the side besides whatever textbook they give you. If you don't want to shoot past your class in terms of progress, maybe not though.

I thought about taking Japanese in my final year of college (I took Spanish in HS and first years of college to fulfill the requirements) when I was nearly graduating and needed just like 10 units of any subject to graduate and was basically taking miscellaneous classes, but it was like a 5 unit class and was M-F or something and I was like screw that, I'm not committing to that much work when I'm almost done.

Then I started learning like....two years after that on my own.

Nice, I've always wanted to learn it, but my school doesn't have it and I would have to take it at the other one in the district but I don't want to have to go back and forth between the two of them

I'll probably end up doing it next semester though, they just cut the main music theory course that I need to take this semester because of low enrollment, and was advised to take the courses at the other one so if things don't get fixed (the class and music teacher are really angry about it and trying to get it reversed but if that doesn't go through I'll have to switch schools rip) I'll have that easier opportunity to take Japanese at least

anyways good luck with your class, don't be a lazy person

I honestly wouldn't be surprised. When I took Spanish in high school, it was mostly Hispanic kids looking to make an easy A.

Granted those knowing Korean might have a harder time with it but IIRC Japanese is kanji is derived from Chinese ... hanzi, I think it's called? whatever they call the characters ... so it'd be a bit easier for them.

Japanese and Korean have more in common with each other than with Chinese languages. All three of them use Chinese characters although Korean doesn't use them nearly as much, knowing them is a huge bonus when it comes to learning the root of words.

They're called hanzi in Chinese, kanji in Japanese and hanja in Korean.
