There was a difference between owning slaves because it was at the time a socially acceptable thing to do, and fighting for the existence of a racist slave state.

This is actually a complete myth and utter bullshit.

At it's absolute HEIGHT in America, only 5% owned slaves. The most wealthy AND out of them the most wealthy who had specific need for slaves.

On top of that, there was slavery oppoisition at the time. It was not as "socially accepted" as pretend it was now to defend historic figures. Bleeding Hearts hated it for morality, tradesmen and industrialists hated them because they held back the economy and mechanisation. And lots of average joes hated it because Governments would conscript them into hunting down escaped slaves.

That's why you will hear so many stories of "Oh my ancestor caught an escaped slave but then let him go." half the people hunting escape slaves did not want to bother doing it.

The slave owners back then are what we would refer to as the 1% today. The people who play golf and avoid tax while their countrymen starve.

Don't lie about historical figures just because you like them. George Washington himself knew owning slaves was a dick move, he just did it anyway because fuck you got mine.

Bobby Gene Eidson III was allegedly standing behind the large shell at Pensacola Beach's boardwalk on Quiet-water Beach Drive in the early hours of Sunday morning, standing completely naked in the water and masturbating.

Escambia County Sheriff's Office deputies noted in their report that onlookers said Eidson noticed several people watching him from the back deck of the Capt'n Fun bar and he waved with both his hands, swinging around his penis in a circular motion.

Police said in Eidson's arrest report that when they got to the scene, they found Eidson swimming on his back, with his genitals in clear view. After police arrived, Eidson got out of the water and put clothes on, the report said. Eidson allegedly told police he wasn't sure why police were called, and his response to their questions about masturbating in public were redacted from the report. Eidson was arrested afterward.

He faces two counts of lewd and indecent exposure of sexual organs. He was booked into Escambia County Jail on Sunday morning and was released on a $1,000 bond the same morning.

A man who was the sole caretaker of his 74-year-old wife has been arrested for allegedly starving her until she died weighing just 68 pounds, police said.

Harold Allen, 75, who was booked in Florida on Monday, is charged with negligent manslaughter in the death of Karen Allen, his wife of 56 years, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

When Harold Allen called the police on January 6 to report that his wife was dead, he told responding deputies that she had been bedridden and unresponsive for around three weeks.

But Karen Allen had not seen to a doctor for approximately five years, he said, even though he regularly sought medical professionals for his own health, the sheriff’s office said.

The medical examiner ruled her death was caused by pulmonary thromboembolism, or a blood clot in the lungs, contributed by immobilization and dehydration.

Allen told investigators she ate the day before she died, but the medical examiner said there was nothing in his wife’s stomach to indicate she had recently eaten before her death.

Karen Allen, who was found “emaciated” at just 68 pounds, also had three wounds on her face and neck, according to the responding deputies.

At least one on her lip was later determined to be the result of severe dehydration and malnourishment, according to the medical examiner.

Police noted there was plenty of food in their Tampa home, and said Harold Allen did not have financial concerns.

If Trump had come out with some massive, powerful, scathing condemnation of white supremacy and Nazi/Klan imagery and said he is disgusted that they use his name, then went on to say something about trying to handle things as peacefully as possible and not trying to meet hatred with violence, that'd be a whole other thing. Still a debate to be had, but I'd respect that a lot more.

Trump's attitude, outside of the forced condemnation 48 hours that he then immediately basically admitted was forced out of him on Twitter, has been "they are just as bad." He has elevated the status of the people who showed up to protest against Klansmen and Nazis to being "just as bad" as Klansmen and Nazis. That's despicable, ESPECIALLY in light of the beatings and the terror attack from the supremacists in this event.

It's fucking crazy that so many don't understand this.
