Trump's whole point yesterday is he wanted to wait for the facts to come out. It's a responsible view point imo.

One that he has refused to follow time and time again. But when nazi protesters are involved, suddenly he wants to be "responsible" and "wait for all the facts?"

Give me an example, of when he was President, where he just charged in and reported the wrong facts.

Watch the press conference again. The media was down his throat trying to make him out to by a sympathizer. They want a good story.

So it's okay to do something socially acceptable but it's not okay to fight for something socially acceptable? You realize how dumb that is.

It's not that it's "okay" for Washington to have owned slaves its that he did enough other great things that we gloss over it.

I figure it's only a matter of time, and hey, fair next I suppose. No sense cherry-picking who is and isn't an "acceptable bigot". We've established there is zero tolerance for that kind of thing to the extent that offensive "celebrations" of such people can and should be taken down if not destroyed.

This goes double if its Native Americans making the call to stop glamorizing their historic killers and pilferers, starting with Columbus.

There's a pastor in Chicago that's trying to get Washington's name removed from city parks on the South Side. So, we're not necessarily at the "WE MUST REMOVE WASHINGTON FROM THE DOLLAR BILL" phase...but it's a step in that direction, possibly.

Well, I mean, realistically, does your progression end? Like, say you guys get a lot of the ideals that you desire. Wouldn't you start going after the more trivial stuff at that point?

But not only that, if we're gonna start condemning all former slave owners, well...is this really that dumb of a question?

It's not far-fetched to consider.

I could care less about this dumb statue - I'm from the North. I'm afraid of the chain reaction that is already happening before our eyes, however (with other statues around the country). I understand you shouldn't keep things just because they're historical, but at the same time, we have to keep reminders around us. The Robert E Lee statue reminded us of several things - one of which was very negative and terrible, but you shouldn't try and forget the guy. You're not going to remove the dark pages of this country's history. They're permanent. Thankfully, in today's society, we have righted that wrong.

these statues aren't even historical. most of them were erected during the civil rights era just to spit in the eye of progress. my grandma is more historical than a lot of these statues.

At this point, I do wonder if it might be better to just take down all statues and other monuments and just keep things neutral. No matter what historic figure you look at, it's pretty much a lock that they were some variation of having been a slave owner, traitor, murderer, anti-gay, misogynist, racist, scoundrel or something considered offensive and problematic.

I wouldn't go that far. :u I'd just stick to people who are being honored for doing something awful. Nazi generals don't get statues either, regardless of if they did good things on the side.

Robert E. Lee himself didn't even approve of statues like this.

Why are people bending over backwards to try and make Robert E. Lee comparable to "any historical figure"? He literally was a leader of a secession that fought to be able to keep owning slaves. That's why he's famous. The Founding Fathers were most likely all horrible people in some way, yes, people acknowledge that. Raising a statue of the founder of your country is not the same as raising a statue of the symbol for the fight slave ownership to spite minorities.

@scar_the_1
You are answering your own question. Here, I'll copy and paste it for you:

"The Founding Fathers were most likely all horrible people in some way, yes, people acknowledge that."

The biggest reason why people remove monuments, books and other reminders of the past is because they are offensive. All of these historic figures committed various crimes against humanity, and saying this guy is Ok but that guy is not is nothing more than temperamental cherry picking. I'm not saying to destroy these artifacts. I'm saying maybe it would be best to remove them all, keep them in a museum, and then let's all move on with our lives.
