"ackshually it's extremely hard to tell sarcasm in text"

No it's not. Sarcasm and satire have been popular in writing for literal thousands of years. Only in the last 10 years did we need to start writing /s.

I think reddit in particular made it popular in large part because of the upvote/downvote system. Which usually runs on momentum and the first few downvotes or upvotes decide whether everyone else will upvote/downvote. And so people write /s to be safe because if some idiot misreads the comment then it could get downvoted to oblivion.

Irony requires two channels of communication: words and intent. In person, you can simultaneously send two signals, while text requires context as the second channel.

Punctuation like /s has been suggested for centuries.

I do think that people have become worse at detecting sarcasm. Maybe because text is becoming a bigger part of communication. Maybe communities are larger and "this is ironic" signals are getting washed out. Maybe just a shift in culture that finds sarcasm distasteful, so they don't assume sarcasm as often. Who knows.

when i went and bought my car i had just taken out a new card at lowes and was worried i had fallen out of excellent rating
when the dealer ran my credit it had me over 800 but credit karma showed 745 lol

There are a few credit scores out there. Credit Karma shows the Trans Union Vantage 3.0 score. Nearly every lender uses FICO 8 or FICO 9. Experian and Equifax used to have their own score but stopped using them because they couldn't unseat FICO. Capital One also shows the vantagescore 3.0, as does a lot of other free websites.

Some lenders have their own score that they do not share publicly.

Free Credit Report shows you your credit report but does not score it, it's to make sure that you understand what's on it. Credit Karma can do the same thing but iirc partners with transunion mostly, FCR gives all 3. Really either one works fine.

The thing is, you have an occupier and an apartheid state.

It would be like calling an uprising of Black Americans during the Jim Crow era an engagement of two sides... when in really you have an absolutely uneven power dynamic. Or probably a better example would be our own Native American genocides in the United States.

The Civil Rights Era would've been a lot different if MLK raped his way across the country. Even the "extremist" black groups like BPP are nothing compared to Hamas.

I guess a literal genocide of the entire Palestinian people and a bulldozing of their land and the very memory of their existence - is a fair response to the Hamas attacks of October 7 following decades of institutionalized apartheid...

Can anyone still defend Israel?

This really papers over a lot of shit to just say everything before this is just "decades of institutionalized apartheid."

I don't like Israel or Bibi and I think the current situation is an apartheid, but I root against Israel because I don't like people that indiscriminately slaughter and rape others, and so I'm not going to carry water for Hamas either.

The Houthis aren't doing something about this, they're just using this as pre-text to shoot at America because Iran is funding them.

Anyway, it turns out that many people don't want to militarily engage when two sides are committing horrific war crimes against each other, and every other attempt at solving it has failed in the last 70 years, because then you get blamed when it doesn't work and also your own people get dead. Joe Biden, Barack Obama, Ronald Reagan, Donald Trump or Bernie Sanders... it doesn't matter who has the office, they are in a position to elevate and act on key issues.

Whoa, Donald Trump must have had a lot of great conservative legislation passed while he was president! The wall is like 3000 miles, right?

K181 posted...
No, he'd be polling worse given that he would've promised way more than Biden did and delivered way less given how divided congress is and how conservative the judiciary is.

Not to mention that loads and loads and loads of moderate Dems were already looking to idiotically jump ship, so you'd better believe that a third party offshoot would've emerged siphoning at least a third of the Dem base away from him and barely denting GOP numbers.

Yeah, this. If the president was a less popular (he got fewer votes) and less able president (and judging by how fucking crazy all of Bernie's campaign people are, I don't think he would have been able to navigate the senate to get even the few bills Dems have passed), would he be more or less popular? Obviously, less popular.

SecretBase posted...
Higher, and for a specific reason.

Biden's initially high favorability was composed in part by moderates. Moderates are notoriously easy to lose. And Biden lost them when his withdrawal from Afghanistan boosted the Taliban. Then he lost progressives with his Israel policy.

Bernie's supporters weren't the type to concern themselves with world policing to begin with, so the complaining would mostly come from people who were never supporting him at all. His initial favorability would remain.

ironman2009 posted...

My issue is the idiots who choose to blame other people for their own failed candidate. Hillary is a great example, so many even today blame Bernie for Trump beating her. You know who's fault it is that Hillary lost? Hillary Clinton, that's who's to blame. She did a poor job appealing to huge numbers of voters, completely ignored Michigan even to focus on Iowa and tried to get disaffected Republicans (which didn't work) and alienated more progressive voters.

If a politician needs certain groups to win? Then they should actually try to do SOMETHING to appeal to those groups instead of just saying "vote for me or else". That's not how you win votes and a lot of people on this site need to figure that out too. Trying to guilt trip people into voting for your candidate doesn't fucking work and can be counter productive. I always encourage people to vote for the Dem because Republicans are just SO much worse but holy shit it's the politicians to blame if they fail to appeal to the voters they need, it's not the people who are to blame.

You realize that multiple people can be at fault, right?

And it's laughable to say that she alienated progressive voters and courted republicans.

Wanted to make college free for most americans, reform immigration to give a path to citizenship, add a public option, gender equal pay, increase min wage. She wasn't Bernie but she was pretty far to the left on issues.

If you meet a progressive that sat out 2016, it's reasonable to ask what was more important that trying to get the person into office that is closer to them in ideals.

I got a minor in Math and took up to calc 5 in college but I don't know how she got that so fast >_> (probably cuz I forgot a lot of shit lol). I know the smaller and bigger triangles are isosceles and 2 of the angles must be equal, so the smaller one has angles of 50-50-80 while the bigger one's pair must be >50 with the top one being <80. And iirc all 4 sided shapes must equal 360 degrees, so one of the angles for that arrow shape must be 280 since it's opposite of the 80 tip of the smaller isosceles, so the remaining 3 angles must equal 80.

But how did she deduce the other angles? >_> I'm trying to figure out the path to victory here but I'm forgetting how cuz I went to stupid American colleges instead of smart Japanese colleges.

You got sidetracked halfway in. You get the 50-50-80. Then, you see that the angle we're solving for is on the circle, and the 80 degree angle is a central angle, with both having the same endpoints. That means our chosen angle is 1/2 of 80, so 40 degrees.

at best we're repeating Iraq, at worst we're complicit in a genocide

Obviously voting Trump does not improve this, but the point is that Biden should not support this any further than he has (or should step down entirely in favor of a primary) because otherwise Biden is going to lose Michigan since its Islamic population will flatly refuse to vote at all, giving us Trump anyway, and it would be completely absurd for Democratic operatives to lecture Muslims on how "it's complicated" and yet still expect anything resembling political support.

  1. Palestine/Israel is complicated.
  2. What isn't complicated is that Trump is significantly more pro-Israel than Biden
  3. Muslims make up a small percent of Michigan and if Biden loses 1 non-muslim voter for each muslim voter he gains, there's no reason for him to push for their vote.
  4. There are other swing states where Muslims are not as influential.
