It's way later, but I saw this topic in my AMP after I got home, so I'll try and answer this a biiiit. I quit Shadowlands before the first major patch even, so I don't have the full perspective, but I am still subbed to r/wow and thus vaguely remember the complaints.
The covenant system sucked. They forcibly attached character power to character aesthetic. I played a warlock, my character aesthetic would be Revendreth or maybe Maldraxxus, but the Ardenweald abilities were far, far better in terms of DPS. The most insulting thing was that this was pointed out almost
immediately after the entire system was announced, but it wasn't fixed until nearly the end of the expansion.
I can't really speak for the actual gameplay of playing your class because I did virtually fuck-all for raids or dungeons, but I do remember the GCD change being absolute ass. This was again something that people immediately told them was going to be shit, they ignored it, and then it was shit until they had to revert it.
The Maw is WoW's version of hell, so I admire their ingenuity in making it hell to play through, but it wasn't the greatest gameplay experience.
Torghast was fun enough, but it pissed off a lot of people because Blizzard was (is?) refuses to create content that isn't tied to character power. I forget exactly what it was, but you gained some sort of currency or rep or something from it that "forced" you to run it ad nauseum so even the people who did like it got sick of it. And then because it was received poorly because they implemented it poorly, they just kind of abandoned it.
I believe this is around the time they also nerfed world quests, so they sucked to do, but that might have been in BFA.
Traveling between zones was a colossal pain in the ass. There were a few niche options that I vaguely remember, but by and large you could only get from one zone to another through Oribos and you could only get in and out of Oribos through a flight path. This flight path was also a loading screen in disguise. Quite the difference from me going into Outland, an expansion released in
2007 and being able to make laps around the entire continent without it once loading.
This is a much pettier complaint, but Oribos also just sucked. It is by far the worst capital city we've had, even including WoD's not-capital cities. At least you could freely mount in Ashran, Oribos had seemingly arbitrary pockets that would dismount you. Maybe this was just me, but its bland, circular design also made it extremely difficult to figure out where the fuck I was.
But perhaps the biggest issue was the lack of content. I'd quit by this time, but it took seven months to get the first patch and I know people did not like Korthia. Then it was another
eight months to get Zereth Mortis which, to their credit, I don't remember any major complaints about.
People are pretty sure there was an entire patch cut from the expansion. There's evidence of a drust raid. Oribos has a portal that wasn't sued. Brainwashed Anduin being the final boss of a raid just makes more sense (how many mid-raid bosses get fully animated cutscenes like that?) with the Jailer being the endboss of a 9.3 raid. The Jailer fight includes mechanics and dialogue that make more sense if he's on Azeroth. And come on, they could
not have included all that Arthas bullshit just to plan for him to show up the way he did.
And I've avoided mentioning it because you were asking for gameplay complaints, but it still must be said that the story was fucking garbage. Just an absolute top to bottom front to back fucking dumpster fire that wasn't content to burn on its own, it had to reach back into history and throw gasoline on WC3 as well.
