Its kinda crazy to think about how good the Search Action genre already was back in 1986.

And yet, for quite some time before the indie revival, they were basically not being made.

(deleted this post so that it would not interrupt the top 10)
Only the exceptions can be exceptional.
The Arcade list was unfortunately not very popular. None of them got much, so I think it was wise to relegate them to this concept rather than giving them their own events.

PC SIDE LISTS ARE DUE BY 12:00 PM CENTRAL TOMORROW

I intend to announce that top 10 after #11 tomorrow. Until then, I'll hand out one more tonight.

While I would typically recommend playing either Nightmare in Dreamland or the now legally unobtainable 3D Classics version, I can't deny how grand this game truly is. It is huge compared to Kirby's Dream Land, and it uses that size to its advantage by creating deeper and more memorable levels. Kirby controls similarly, but is now able to use different powers from enemies you swallow, which becomes the defining variable to set Kirby apart from other 2D platformers. It's a bit undercooked in this rendition, as the powers themselves are rarely utilized to create unique platforming or combat encounters, but there are some levels where you can do cool things with Wheel or Laser. The other powers do have a tendency to share similar properties, but it can be quite fun to toy with them in spite of this. Plus, there's always the more interesting abilities such as Ball or UFO to inject life into the levels, though you unfortunately can't take UFO out of the level you acquire it in. Even though most of these powers are quite redundant, it LOOKS different, and this game LOOKS incredible. This is probably the best sprite-work on the NES and I'm not sure it's even close. Every level feels unique because of this and it's awesome to see how each piece comes together. And the music absolutely bangs too. But definitely go for the 3DS version if at all possible, the framerate will chug pretty bad on an NES.

10. Rampage -- An absolute classic. Nothing like taking King Kong, Godzilla, or a giant wolfman to flatten cities across the U.S. I've played this game on so many different systems. Arcade was naturally one of the harder ones since it's meant to eat your money, but it's one of those games that's just fun to grab a friend or two, and pop a stack of quarters into the machine.

9. Off-Road -- I didn't expect anyone else to remember this existed, but it was one of the ubiquitous racing games from back in the day. Most racing games were over the shoulder, like Pole Position, but a few like Super Sprint and Out Run asked you to look at the whole course from above. Following the traditional R.C. Pro Am "don't get last place" format, collecting nitros and upgrades so you could slog around a bunch of monster truck/motocross tracks was a great game to run on a single quarter if you knew what you were doing.

8. Pac-Man -- It's Pac-Man. Duh. Only surprise is that it didn't go higher.
6. Ms. Pac-Man -- See Pac-Man.

7. Contra -- I also expect this to show up on the NES list since I think probably more people remember this game as being the banner-carrier for the Konami code. An incredibly hard game if you're a kid who isn't paying attention to the whole screen, but thanks to having 30 lives on NES, I've beaten this at least a dozen times at 3 or 4 different friends' houses. And I played it on arcade cabinets, too, but never got very far since 3 lives is much more restrictive.

5. Final Fight -- Good, classic, side-scrolling beat-em-up. This era had a great many of these, and while I might be surprised not to see a few others, it's no surprise Mayor Haggar makes the list.

4. Donkey Kong -- Forget Play-Choice 10 or non-super Mario Bros. Donkey Kong was Nintendo's first appearance in the arcades, and one of the truly classic games of all-time. Whether it's a *good* game is open to interpretation, but it's certainly classic.

3. Space Invaders -- Another game that was simply ubiquitous in the 80s. I've played this on Atari. I've played this on 5 different ancient computer brands. Even people who didn't know video games knew Space Invaders. I was never very good at it, but I could at least usually beat two levels before the game got obnoxious.

2. OutRun -- Of all the games here, this is probably the one I've played the least. Which is not to say I haven't played it. OutRun represents the classic racing game of old. They even made versions where you could sit in a seat and "drive," which of course became a staple later for games like Daytona and Cruis'n.

1. TMNT - And if Final Fight were an obvious inclusion, TMNT was *the* game to play in the arcades back in the day. I swear every pizza parlor and movie theater had a copy of this game, which is no surprise because even if a single player didn't go through their quarters nearly as quickly, it could cycle four players at a time. And remember: Winners don't use drugs.
Only the exceptions can be exceptional.
Well I feel slightly better seeing the proper version of TMNT Arcade won its respective list. I'm just miffed I didn't put TMNT 3 first, which would have gotten it in - I strongly considered it. I sometimes think it's the best beat 'em up ever, even better than TMNT Arcade. And still seems like a tiebreaker was needed for Ninja Gaiden to get in over it.

I am on the same page with azurac on most of these arcade write-ups:

Rampage and Off-Road were unique in being 3-player games. The upgrading system in Off-Road, in addition to the static overhead view, was really cool and unique, added an RPG-like element.

I don't think it's necessary to include Ms Pac-Man (took Galaga's spot imo) in addition to Pac-Man, but yes Pac-Man was too much of a classic not to give it a point

Contra I think of as more of an NES game, yeah

Final Fight was an honorable mention for me - had it 13th. Really great, early beat 'em up.

Donkey Kong became my favorite old old school arcade game a while back, surpassing Galaga. One of the first real platformers and paved the way for the Mario megafranchise.

Space Invaders was pretty cool and of course necessary for Galaga/other vertical shooters to exist, but I don't think it's aged well

OutRun was way cool and very impressive for the time - I had it 4th. I definitely remember playing in the immersive sit-in version. As a kid I thought driving into the water on purpose was hilarious for some reason.

Absolutely right on TMNT, had it #1 as well - the game that sparked my love of video games at 4/5 years old. If the arcade I was at had it, it was the first game I was playing.

-----

So 6 of my 10 made it, the other 4 being Space Ace, Motos, Galaga and Double Dragon.

I figure not many people of heard of Motos, but it was a really cool 'king of the hill' overhead game where you bully enemies off a platform, with an upgrade system kind of like Off-Road:

The classic gothic horror side-scroller, kickstarting one of the biggest franchises in gaming. Castlevania deserves praise for not only establishing a test of skill and memorization that would define the "Nintendo Hard" formula, but for its monster-infested castle drawing on all manner of classic horror tropes, bringing the idea of horror games a step further into the mainstream. Technically impressive for its time, Castlevania pushed the NES early on with detailed backgrounds, haunting music, and smooth character movement, and hidden secrets and power-ups rewarded exploration, all together combining for an experience I actually still find rather essential and exciting nearly 40 years on. It's definitely one of the first games I always think of when the NES is brought up - it's addictive, challenging, atmospheric, and an essential, iconic part of the console's library that got me interested in playing and exploring NES & retro games in the first place over a decade ago when all I used to really know was modern games.

Perhaps one of the most well-known "fun facts" in gaming is that Super Mario Bros. 2 was actually a title by the name of Doki Doki Panic in Japan before having character sprites swapped to a Super Mario aesthetic for Western release. Which is a shame, not necessarily because the original aesthetic itself was worthwhile in any way, but because the core mechanics of the game are quite fun to play with. Picking things up and throwing them adds a lot of depth to how one can approach levels. Many of the levels are quite memorable, each world having it's own mechanics. They do kinda run short on ideas with a few of the later stages being redundant, but there's a lot of diversity on display here. The boss fights are also great, arguably some of the best on the NES. The franchise would eventually go back to it's roots rather than continue expanding on many of the ideas brought up in this game, but this was for the better. Still, it would've been nice for the original IP to have gained some traction and provide further development of the unique mechanics. This is a fun game.

My favorite fun fact about Super Mario Bros 2 is that is ACTUALLY DID begin its development as a Mario sequel before getting reskinned to Doki Doki Panic and then reskinned back into a Mario game. So instead of "did you know SMB2 was originally a game called Doki Doki Panic?" it's actually "did you know Doki Doki Panic was originally a Mario game?"

I realize it's a lot of Mega Man games making the list but the thing is, they're all really good lol, like I'd still rather play Mega Man 6 than most other NES games

Well even if you'd put MM6 at #300, that'd still be above most other NES games.

5 and 6 are decent games, they're just a notch or two below the first 4.
Last finished: Activision Anthology (PS2) (Patches+Unlockables): Barnstorming, Chopper Command, Stampede, Grand Prix, Megamania, Pitfall!, River Raid.

In comparison to the other NES Mega Man games, 5 has always felt a bit uninspired to me. Not bad, by any means. Just a little bland. Its that small town you stop in at the halfway point of your annual road trip vacation to stretch your legs for a few minutes, because its nice and clean and they have a couple of mildly interesting places to stock up on snacks that are slightly overpriced but novel enough to justify it because its a tradition now. You enjoy your time there because theres nothing *wrong* with it, but youre never outright excited about it because there are more interesting things happening before and after youre there.

I like Mega Man 5. I gave it a +2 vote for this project. The charged Buster is kind of overpowered and most other weapons are sort of dull, the Robot Masters themselves err a little on the silly side, endgame is too long and not very interesting, its probably a little too easy, and Ive never been a huge fan of the music. But its still Mega Man. Its even later-in-life-NES Mega Man, so theres a definite feeling of smoothness and polish to it. Its not even without its own little advancements - Beat, for example, is an enjoyable new inclusion. Its good. Its fun. Its just not why I planned the road trip. Theres nothing wrong with that!

Mega Man 5 has always been the definitive Mega Man of the 4-6 trilogy to me. It plays incredibly smoothly, the music is some of the best in the series, and the level designs are just top notch - all of this stuff is markedly better than in 4 or 6 imo. Every time I play MM5 it feels fresh all over again. I think it might be the most polished and well designed Mega Man ever - it really feels like they knew what they were doing at every step in the process after making four of these things. Just an incredibly fun and accessible game. I think it's a little too easy, especially the bosses, but that's a fairly minor complaint.
Where are these other ranking topics being posted? I don't think I've seen any beyond NES.

Though I do find Castlevania 1 more nostalgic, Castlevania 3 was admittedly an ambitious improvement in every way. Multiple playable characters with unique abilities (especially the introduction of Alucard) was a fun way to shake up the formula and add depth and strategy to an already compelling gameplay loop. Dracula's Curse offered a more open-ended experience. Levels branched out even more than before, with increased enemy density and occassionally unforgiving design; it was frustrating, but accomplishing. The exploration-heavy level design also hinted at the Metroidvania style the series would adopt. Also improved were the character sprites and backgrounds, doubling down on the Gothic horror aesthetic. It's one of the best games in the franchise even to this day and yet another NES essential.

Contra is a tricky one to rate, since, at it's corest of forms, it's a brutally challenging experience, with limited lives and 1-hit deaths requiring a pretty high skill level to complete a playthrough. But using cheat codes, or even save states, allows lesser players such as myself to really experience the brilliant action gameplay this title is known for. It divides it's levels into a number of different gameplay types, each requiring a unique skill set and presenting fun action along the way. While the intense punishment for poor play is certainly a barrier to entry, the game does well to reward continued practice of its relentless action sequences. There are few things as satisfying as getting in the zone with Contra or it's many sequels.

My list was mostly Commodore 64 games, with a couple exceptions. But that's what I had back then. My parents were anti-console for a very long time, but somehow playing games on a computer was okay.

And there weren't very many universal experiences on C64. Or DOS. Or really anything outside of school edutainment. Other than ports, Prince of Persia was probably the first genuinely successful computer game that I can think of. (Successful is obviously an incredibly relative term here. Does Ultima count? Zork? King's Quest?)

And I just realized Quest for Glory I was 1989. Damn.
Only the exceptions can be exceptional.
Ivan "Ironman" Stewart's Super Off Road steering wheel in the arcade is one of the best forms of control there ever was to a video game.
Spin to win. Bahhh it's so good.

Also, I forget if I voted for PC games. I would have totally went "Indianapolis 500: The Simulation" because dang that had amazing 3D graphics and physics for an 80's DOS game.
I'd Rather Be A Savage Little Elephant, than be a big Bald Bull

I did consider Indy 500, but the only PC driving game I ended up including was Vette! (I ranked it 2nd, behind only Prince of Persia), which has odd graphics, but is unique in being open-world - very impressive for pre-1990. While Dragon Quest is the king of JRPGs in their home country, that title is comfortably held by Final Fantasy in the west. The first Final Fantasy has been remade, remastered, and reiterated in excess. It's one of the most revolutionary titles, not just for the genre, but for gaming as a whole. Being able to customize a team of adventurers allows for the chance to experience completely different playthroughs. The story, while fairly simple by todays standards, was unlike anything available on consoles in its era. It even has an unexpected plot twist for anyone somehow able to go into it blind today! The recent pixel remasters are a faithful and accessible way to experience this title, so I highly recommend giving it a whirl of you've somehow yet to play it yet!

Like many classic NES games, Punch-Out emphasized memorization, reflexes, and pure fun. It wasn't this ultra-technical boxing sim, it focused on timing and patter recognition, making every fight as hard as you made it on yourself. The punches were clearly telegraphed and could be countered in your sleep eventually, but this simplicity offered a surprisingly high skill ceiling nevertheless. I hate to say, but it's DaRk sOuls!!!! What made this gameplay even more memorable though was its wacky cast of stereotypes all having distinct personalities and fighting styles. Again, it's another game that made me highly interested in the NES, it's so easy to pick up and play and run through the gauntlet over and over again - holding your breath hoping that your opponent reaches that coveted 9 count.
