Like many classic NES games, Punch-Out emphasized memorization, reflexes, and pure fun. It wasn't this ultra-technical boxing sim, it focused on timing and patter recognition, making every fight as hard as you made it on yourself. The punches were clearly telegraphed and could be countered in your sleep eventually, but this simplicity offered a surprisingly high skill ceiling nevertheless. I hate to say, but it's DaRk sOuls!!!! What made this gameplay even more memorable though was its wacky cast of stereotypes all having distinct personalities and fighting styles. Again, it's another game that made me highly interested in the NES, it's so easy to pick up and play and run through the gauntlet over and over again - holding your breath hoping that your opponent reaches that coveted 9 count.
