and even then, half the stores didn't accept cash.
Maybe this is an ignorant view of the situation but if I was alive back when they were actually redeemable for silver, how in the heck is that not a trade I do almost every time? I've never had a good grasp on how they actually worked back in those days, despite being a currency collector and owning a few silver certs.Because back then the silver in a silver dollar was only worth $1. So your choice was carrying around a wallet filled with paper bills, or a big sack full of coins.
I could pay the farrier with a check if I had to, but I know they prefer cash.
Most handymen and laborers prefer cash because it lets them fudge income for tax purposes. No paper trail means you can underreport.
I am kind of surprised that (non-certified) checks are still a thing. Most places refuse to take them for major purchases and everyplace that does usually allows credit/debit cards which are way more convenient. I have used the same book of checks since 2012, and it is still like half full.

They're still useful for bill payments (for people who don't want to use digital payment). They're not really for day-to-day transactions for most people at this point.I always use a check when I pay my car registration, because they charge an extra 1.5% for credit/debit cards.
Last I heard, something like 30% of people still use them though. So companies can't outright stop accepting them yet.

It depends where you live; in some cities here, it is a bad idea to walk around with more than $50 whereas in some places, it is perfectly okay to walk around town with more than $5000. Having a credit card is great and all but sometimes, some places just don't accept it and it could be a restaurant and they can accuse you of dine and dash. If you use your debit card, it isn't secure enough as that there is a small chance all the money in your bank account and vanish into thin air. That's why cash is important in life wherever you are.
I don't think I've ever encountered a store that didn't take cash. There's a few here in ABQ that don't. Not uncommon for street vendors and smaller operations to also not accept these days.
