A language teacher in a Japanese secondary school has introduced a novel if horrifying new way to teach students English: by playing P.T., also known as the Silent Hills teaser.

P.T. is Hideo Kojima's uniquely terrifying spin on the horror genre, presented via a home filled with unexpected encounters and bizarre mysteries. In the end, P.T. revealed itself to be a "Playable Trailer" for the secret project Silent Hills, which never came to fruition. For many myself included it's considered one of the scariest video game experiences of all time.

As detailed on the school's blog and reported by Automaton, students were required to play through the experience in English, as well as give each player's commands in English, such as "walk around the room" and "answer the phone." According to the blog update, it created an exciting atmosphere in which students around the age of U.S. sophomores could familiarize themselves with English while taking a trip through one of the most terrifying games ever released.

Apparently, the students were particularly alarmed when the phone started ringing but were encouraged to talk about through "natural English expressions."

Konami officially cancelled Silent Hills in 2015 after a painfully public fallout with Kojima. The free-to-play demo was then scrubbed from the PlayStation Network, provoking false rumors that the company was removing already downloaded copies of the demo from PlayStation 4 consoles worldwide. Clearly, this teacher had the forethought to preserve their saved copy for over a decade.

I am legitimately curious how this teacher was able to get it working such that an entire classroom can use it. It was my understanding that if you didn't already have a downloaded copy on a PS4 that it was impossible to actually run it.

I assume it's just students taking turns, maybe as groups, and/or volunteers.

but yea, you're most likely not going to have any kind of access to it unless if you downloaded it when it was available or you were able to pick up a PS4 that had it.

This is actually a pretty bad way to teach language in a group setting. Especially for that age level. It sounds more like he just wanted to bring PT into the classroom.

the majority of the class just ends up sitting there watching and not saying anything while someone fumbles around with the game.

Cool idea, but not great for people who know

My friend is a high school English teacher and he works games into his lessons. I think he said that the deal was that anyone who could beat him at KoF XV would get an automatic A. He's insanely good at the game though, so the kids had no chance. But he told me that if they just read the rules, it says that they could do practically whatever they wanted, like changing his button configuration before the match lol.

Also he recently borrowed my board game Fire Tower. Not sure what sort of lesson he's gonna do with that though.

Ngl I still don't understand the lesson supposed to be learned here. "Beat me at this video game and skip the class" isn't really motivating anyone to study the material lol. at that point might as well just give everyone an A

I think he was just trying to get them to read things carefully, which they apparently failed spectacularly at.
