I just don't get why they have to censor and shorthand everything on social media.

Really? Brainrot started with Rock and Roll and TV in the 50s. Then in the 70's-90's TV was basically raising some kids.

Then the internet raised kids in the 00' and '10s

Now it's being terminally online.

But don't forget, Cable Guy and Trueman Show were already, if darkly and humorously, warning us of this in the 90's.

In one case Jim was raided by TV, in the other he was raised on tv.

It's a reference to something that a millennial did as a joke. In that vein more than one age category can share a joke, so the act of Gen Z students sharing it doesn't preclude it from being a millennial meme.

And they might do some quick background check to make sure. We had that little era of people getting canceled for stuff they said 20 years ago, so chances are that everyone might be playing safe and it just became the norm.

Preeetty much. Every generation did stupid crap, the only change was what specific stupid crap and what they called it. Like, my dad is a Boomer and he talked about the time where it got popular to just climb up lampposts and sit on the top of them... something that led to the obvious "and then people fell off to great bodily harm" end result for many of them.

The old adage about scams pretty much applies here: if you didn't see any friends liking/doing dumb crap (how dumb being relative) then that just means that you didn't have any friends.

Everyone always wants to point out precedent, but no one has the STONES to say that's worse than its ever been.

Youtube poop existed and was utter trash sure. But it was isolated, I didn't watch it and I didn't know anyone that did. We weren't glued to our phones then. I think it's far worse now and with the Tiktokification of the internet, the immediate dopamine people need is a problem. I think it's infested its way far deeper into peoples every day consumption of the internet. A lot more than people may realize.

Here are just a few examples of how bad the brainrot is these days imho.

Attention spans are so unbelievably shitty that any video longer than 12 seconds has a second video playing minecraft parkour edited on top of it.

Have you noticed that every single "viral" video is now edited that way? Quick cut of the guy jumping the counter at Burker King before you see the whole lead up to why.

The fainting game stuff isn't just debased, it's absolutely beyond the pale stupid. Meanwhile Gen Z was doing the Benadryl challenge because of 4chan drug board memes leaking into Tiktok about "The Hat Man". So since they thought the concept of a "Hat Man" and "Sleep Paralysis demons" was funny they started abusing a major Deliriant, diphenhydramine, so they could understand it. There are teens/adults going to NA clinics because they are recreationally using Benadryl.

There's a whole subreddit about people who use Benadryl.

Back then dumb kids just disappeared and went missing.

Stuff wasn't recorded and help wasn't easy to get.
