A shitload of Zoomer culture/slang and current online culture in general can be directly traced to racist "parody" Twitter/FB comedy pages back in the late '00s/early '10s.

"Deeply unserious" and variations are used as derision toward people with awful takes or doing stupid things, not toward people being funny (from what I've seen at least). Like you'd say "this administration is deeply unserious" in response to Trump posting an AI video of him dumping poop on people.

I wouldn't be surprised if it were this. We have a whole generation of kids who are developing slang that's at least partially adapted around what YouTubers and streamers have to say to get around the words that will demonetize them.

My actual criticism here would be Gen Z aka the "Christopher Columbus Generation" walking around thinking they're discovering shit. When they talk about themselves like "We're so unserious as a generation." Like they're the first kids in the world to goof around and have a laugh.

Gen Z is also the only group I see say shit like "I swear you can't have a unique experience anymore" or something about doing something no one has ever done before. I don't understand the idea they have that they need to be looking for completely novel experiences.

I have never seen "unserious" used for "funny." It's usually when someone is acting so stupid that they can't be serious about what they are doing.

I've certainly used "not serious" to describe a troll from time to time. It certainly wasn't because I found them amusing.

I admit I find the "commit sewer slide" as a term to be pretty funny by how stupid it is. These guys really did their best to get their point across without losing money by the internet nannies.

I'm pretty much smack in the middle of the Gen Y/Millennial generation, and while I might not use really any newer slang, I don't loathe it either. One part I just don't care, another part being I understand that this shit happens with each generation, and I sure as shit don't want to do to younger generations what Gen X, Boomers and the like did to my generation.

I've even scolded other millennials on that, telling them that no Gen Z isn't responsible for most problems in society, and not to generalize them either.

I swear I'm stuck in a unique time loop with how history keeps repeating itself.

blame social media and share-my-entire-life culture for this. If you find a non-novel experience, it has the double downside of not being interesting to anyone you know (since they've seen it all already) + you are acutely aware of just how non-novel it is because you've seen it so many times online already

It's been like this forever.

Boomers were chastised for Drugs, Rock and Roll and slang.
Gen X chastised for drugs, video games, rock and roll, and slang
Millenials were chastised for video games, slang, and the internet
Now Gen Z is being chastised for video games, the internet, and always being online.

Sooo...

The only thing I really find fault with is always being online, and tbf, it's not Gen Z fault when all the former hang outs like the mall, book stores, game store, video game stores, etc are destroyed by Amazon.

I remember seeing a Borders in my college town and joking it was as bad as Fox Books ("You've got mail" reference)
That was about 25 years ago.

Whining about generational discourse has to be way up there.

Gonna be honest, discussions (if you even want to call them that) of the form where you say some younger generation is doing some thing wrong and weird and you hate it and you're glad you're not them and that's the whole thought are indeed pretty dumb

that said I think there are a lot of potentially interesting things that can be said regarding how the generations are different, what sort of factors cause differences in attitude/mindset/behaviour, etc. we're in a time where we're starting to slowly realize that maybe social media and always-onlineness is not great for kids and their mental health, and honestly I think with the speed at which cultural shifts around social media and the internet happen, the current way we're used to dividing generations is no longer finegrained enough

And I mean both of those in a good way.

I'm doing a good job of not letting what the youth is doing these days bother me, because I am widely aware that the things I enjoyed as a child/teen are in no way the same things children/teens enjoy now. I won't become a boomer.
