So it looks like smart fridge will have force adverts, which I assume there will be unskippable adverts. I really hope this is clickbait and it is fake.

Why does anyone need a 'smart' fridge? I can't think of any reason why my fridge would need a Internet connection.

Solution: don't buy a smart fridge. You don't need a fucking screen for a device that literally just keeps food cold and dispenses water and ice.

For real, what is the appeal of a smart fridge? Like, what is one feature of a smart ____ that applies to the use case of a fridge at all?

That is the best solution, I don't see the appeal of a smart fridge. Now that the fridge has forced adverts, now even less interested.

I wonder if the fridge runs on Android OS, that would explain why it has adverts.

It's just not enough.

I'm going to search around today and see if one can install custom firmware on the TV or perhaps get in to developer mode with it.

You know, it doesn't even have to be a feature of an existing smart ____. Just any feature that no fridge before 2010 had. What is any feature that no refrigerator before 2010 had, that has any relevance to the use case of a refrigerator?

I mean, get crazy if you have to. I'll accept little robots that jump out and deliver your beer to you. I really wanna know, what do fridges not have.

I will not be buying a smart fridge.

You should be able to block IPs on your router. Look up online what the IPs for the smart TV ads are and get them blocked.

Why does anyone buy a smart fridge in the first place? Its only purpose is to keep food cold, it doesnt need a screen or WiFi or anything.

My fridge will connect to the Internet, but it doesn't need to, so I skipped that part.

You don't need a screen on your fridge, that's silly.

Ok I've got one. It has a bunch of sensors and moving mechanical parts to tetris the contents for you so that you maximize your space. And it keeps track of where everything is and can pull it back out for you in case you can't find it. There's a smart feature a fridge could use.

Unfortunately, I could see those becoming the only option eventually. Just like how it's near-impossible to buy a non-smart TV these days.

I bought a new LG TV earlier in the year and the home screen was so annoying and combined with how laggy it's built-in Hulu and Disney+ apps were, I decided to just disconnect it from the Wifi completely, set the TV to power on to whatever HDMI input it was on last, and just keep using my Firestick.

Just some ideas. I don't think any of these are worth having a screen on my fridge playing ads but I'm sure they would be to someone

I seriously doubt it. Tech and home appliance companies may have some overlap, but they aren't the same industry. There will always be cheaper non-smart options as long as people don't overwhelmingly buy into this garbage.

The only things I could possibly imagine a smart fridge doing is

A) Having sensors to detect certain gasses or odors that indicate something has spoiled.
B) Thermoregulation to keep temperatures better and more balanced across the whole unit.
C) In a world with AI integration, an AI that can read and remember everything you put in so you can ask the fridge if you have something without needing to open it, and also how close that thing is to expiring.

And I'm not even sure those are really needed, but it's the kind of feature that rich people could use to justify spending a premium on a cold box.

I actually do kinda want some of these ideas, now that I've heard them.

They're supposed to also supposed to be able to adjust temperature and humidity to what's best for the food you have stored, give you notifications about food that's nearing expiration, and give you recipes based on the ingredients you have in your fridge. I don't know how well any of that works, but those are some of the selling points.

The theory, as it is with all IoT smart devices, is that the device captures useful data like habits, what you're putting in the fridge, maintenance information, etc. all to drive a better experience for consumers

The *practice* is that doing all that in a meaningful way costs money so they stop at "sells your uncategorized data to advertisers" (plus side, since tagging the data also costs money, the ad people aren't getting much out of it either. Nobody is happy about this)

Smart devices record everything you say unless you go out of your way to disable it (and sometimes they keep doing it anyway).

I wouldn't be surprised if they gave it Neural Net speech recognition, voice synthesis and LLM, and people started using their fridge as their own in-home shrink.

Among other things, yes, actually, depending on the model and if that input is configured.

Like it's not hard to just go "yep there's a microphone, pipe audio event to the data lake". It's the interpretation part that takes effort nobody wants to pay for or do (that'd actually be useful besides dangling it in front of marketing people)

That's before getting into more comprehensive sorts of sensors like the alleged cameras and whatnot. Again, not complicated to go "yep a thing moved, pipe next X seconds of video output to the cloud". The hard part is determining what's useful.

Or just straight up ask the user for their grocery list and skip the sensor cost altogether. People offer a surprising amount of stuff if you just prompt them for it in a way that isn't seen as intrusive

Knowing me and my lack of understanding in all things, I'm about to soon cause so much damage and chaos on this TV. *lol*

I don't know if it's just me but with how much liquid a refrigerator and/or a freezer has in it and can accumulate over a period of time, find it crazy anyone wants screens on their refrigerator in the first place.

It was one thing to have digital panels and buttons but screens can be damaged extremely quickly.

What about making fridges that just keep things cold and absolutely nothing else
