OH this next one we dont even have to guess because it actually happened with its remake paper mario the 1000 year door for having a transgender character in it

phantasy star 1 for having a female protagonist

donkey kong country 2 for replacing donkey kong with a girl boss and making her the best character in the game

donkey kong country 3 for now having said female character be the lead and have to rescue DK and diddy

Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance

  • it's a loose WW2 allegory, most obviously Daein is Nazi Germany (starts the war, absurdly racist, might-makes-right philosophy, etc.)
  • it has heavy anti-racism, anti-slavery and anti-genocide themes
  • late in the game one of your units (who is from Daein), who starts the game off as a huge racist, can defect from your army if you fuck up (the boss of the map is her father)...but you can actually get her back if she has an A-support with one of the characters who is part of the race she's racist against

I was thinking of the green energy bit (how mako energy is bad, and its similarity to fossil fuels)

Not sure it counts, but Mass effect and dragon age have had female protags since the start, and in dragon ages case, multi-racial cast as well.

The main thing you have to remember about this kind of thing is that the modern day woke complainers actually wouldn't complain about a female MC...........IF the female MC is conventionally attractive. Even more so if she is white or asian rocking a skirt like jill did in original RE3 (and when that same outfit showed back up in higher definition as a unlockable for REmake on the gamecube it was definitely really loved then, lol. Funny enough I actually remember a lot of complaints when capcom dialed down the panty shots in the more modern REmake re-releases on the 360/PS3/PS4/xbone/PC via making jill's RE3 outfit's skirt a void in those versions of the game compared to the gamecube and wii releases. Its a change that is actually baked into jill's model itself so there was some anger about it).

Same with fantasy female MCs with a lot of sex appeal. The tifas, velvet crowes and tyris flares of gaming have always been loved. That golden axe beast rider game starring tyris as the MC wasn't something that anyone at the time hated just because she was the MC compared to someone like ax battler (I think that is his name. Its been some years man) or gillius thunderhead......the game itself just sucked, lol.

The love for conventionally attractive females never seemed to have extended to the rare black female MCs we would get though. (Which coming from gamers as a whole always felt annoyingly typical). RE5's sheva was always hot as hell but she definitely got her share of complaints just for existing.
