I always liked Stratego.

As a family we like playing Sorry.

When the mood strikes and the people are available to play, Agricola is fun as far as complex ones go.

Anyone ever play Ready Set Bet? Its a horse racing game where you make bets as the race takes place, with all betting cut off after 3 horses make it past a certain distance on the track. There are a ton of different variations to bet on and you get specific power ups/advantages that pertain only to you. You can play if with dice to manually move the horses along the track, or get an app that plays out the race on a video screen for you, letting you focus on betting.

I played it for the first time a few weeks ago and had a lot of fun with it.

Seasons.

You draft your hand of fantasy relics and minions at the start of the game alongside the other players, and then set yourself to gain them at the start of the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd year of the game. Then you roll some elemental-theme diced as you progress through spring-summer-fall-winter to gain resources/points and bring out the cards in your hand, and then at the end of year 3, count up who has the point victory points. Healthy mix of strategy, luck, and player interaction :D

Betrayal at House on the Hill. The legacy edition in particular is some of the most fun my gaming group has ever had.

Also, Gloomhaven. I get to play that again this weekend. Helps scratch the old D&D itch.

Oh, and for a simple little card game, Love Letters is amazingly fun.

The Game of Life.

I grew up on all the classics like Monopoly, Sorry, Candyland, Trouble, Connect Four, Go, Battleship, Chess, Checkers, and so on. I think The Game of Life was the best.

Also while you use a board I consider it a card game but I would say Cribbage would be a top contender but I don't consider it a true board game.

I don't recognize 99% of the stuff people are saying in this topic.

We randomly bought the Mario Bros version of The Game of Life for one of the kids as a gift, and its surprisingly super fun. Usually the licensed games are either identical or are mediocre.

Look for a local gaming store (MTG/Pokemon/Warhammer) and see if they have board game nights. The genre is so much more than the stuff you'd get from ToysRUs in the 1980s.

Betrayal at House on the Hill
Root
Red Dragon Inn

probably my top three today, the latter one is super fun with friends if you like riffing on D&D tropes.

As a kid I really enjoyed Stratego, Boggle XL, Payday, and I guess Clue.

Theres a more kid-friendly version of Betrayal with Scooby Doo characters which is f***ing genius:

https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/302809/scooby-doo-betrayal-at-mystery-mansion

Azul, Potion Explosion, and The Quacks of Quedlinburg are ones I dont hear people talk about that are pretty fun too.

Oh, and how could I forget Trogdor the Board Game? Even if you dont know a lick about Homestar Runner its a really fun co-op game.

The makers released another version a few years before it called Funfair, but that was just about trying to make your amusement park; no fucking with other people. Wheres the fun in that?

Eclipse
Twilight Struggle

Those are my two favs.

Eclipse is a multiplayer pv/pve depending on how you do it. It's a resource management game where you build ships and try to attack aliens, or other players.
There is a strict 8 turn limit, but you can do a lot in a turn.

Twilight Struggle is a 2 player card game based around the cold war. Each card has historical significance. One person plays the US, the other plays the USSR. It's a world conquest game.
It ain't for everyone, but hot damn do I find it fun.

Love all of these. Everdell especially is like a 'comfort food' game for me.

It's such a pretty and very cute game. I remember, when I was playtesting it during it's kickstarter, that I thought having a literal tree was stupid and unnecessary....oh how wrong I was. I think it's the literal reason so many people know about the game, playing it on a game board night just stands out and shows high production value in board games is almost just as important for marketing purposes. It's a game that my wife and her friends play a lot when they're at our house. I would play it with my friends, but the ones that like board game are just so insecure about playing it.

I would also highly suggest Dixit if you enjoy Mysterium, the game Mysterium takes heavy influence from. I think now it can go up to 8 players now.
