Precipice was one of my top favorite songs of the entire bracket of 256. So I'm very happy with it winning. Most of the other songs I was particularly excited about got knocked out early or failed to make the bracket at all. For me, this was a pretty weak field overall with pretty meh results throughout (though not terrible - the retirees are a solid group, just unexciting). Precipice may not have been my top pick for champion among even this group of retirees, but it was certainly one of the acceptable ones. Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is the first VGMC champion from a Western property, isn't it? (We've had a couple of songs from Western composers win before, but representing Japanese games/franchises) I thought that was kind of interesting. Anyway, it was a fun time as always. Accomplished my main personal goal coming in, which was realizing the Lost Forest redemption run. A bit sad that it couldn't quite go all the way, but glad that it put up a good fight against the eventual champ and proved itself every bit the top contender I thought it would be two years ago. I also wish I liked Glacier Remix a bit more, it's good but I prefer the original Shiva despite my fondness for Hayato Asano. Let it be known that I truly didnt believe that Precipice would win, and repeatedly argued against people who called that it would. Whos laughing now? This whole contest had a lot of results that I didnt think would happen, and Im still not sure how much of that was down to me second-guessing that the obvious thing wouldnt happen because its too obvious, vs. there actually being a shift in voter preferences (or both). Whatever the case, it makes me excited to see where things go from here. Its fun to be surprised after all, and Im already thinking about reassessing songs that I previously dismissed as having no chance. Like, with FIGHT!! retiring, is it finally time for Pursuit ~ Keep Pressing On? Thats seriously a question worth asking now! With Precipice being my final nom, its time to consider what I learned from supporting it, and overall from my first time participating in noms. Well, again, Im not sure. Its easy to say the wait and see if you really, really like the song thing again, but I DO like Precipice. Maybe not as much as my first impression of it, but is it right to hold back from supporting a song just because theres a chance I like it less than I think I do? Getting caught up in endless second-guessing would be no good. Or you could say that Precipice was so popular that it was foolish of me to support it instead of some more niche song. But if everyone thought that way, no popular song would ever get enough support. What I think it comes down to is balance: finding a balance of different kinds of songs, songs with strong first impressions and slow burns, songs popular and niche. And yes, I realize it would help to not immediately use up almost all my supports, but can you blame me for being excited? I want to keep that excitement, that feeling of investment in what happens in VGMC, just expressed a bit more judiciously. Finally, as a reminder... Mechonis Field, Suna no Shiro -The Castle of Sand-, Passing Through the Forest, and 257 other retirees from past VGMCs will return in the VGMC OmniToC, coming this year for sure!
