Demon's Souls. Was a free game on PS+, beat the first boss, then put it down. About a year or so later started seeing a few videos on Dark Souls 2 and it triggered a memory of a similar game. Went back and have been hooked for the last decade.

maybe Torment: Tides of Numenera.

it's not the best CRPG I've played through, but I still really enjoyed it.

I first bought it for the PS4 when it it was released because of how I kept hearing about how Planescape Torment was this great game, and how Numenera was its spiritual successor.

anyway, it was my first CRPG after Dragon Age Origins, but I still didn't really "get" CRPGs at the time, so I stopped playing.

after some years, where I became more accustomed to CRPGs, I gave it another try, and I finally started to enjoy my experience with it.

Morrowind for me, too. Tried to play the original release and didn't get anywhere, then a year+ later I bought the GotY edition and got hooked.

Fallout 4 for me, I was really dissapointed at the initial release, was not into the crafting, annoyed by the dialogue options etc. I got the PS5 upgrade when it came out and got really into the crafting/ building. Each settlement was a fortress and I built a zoo at the drive in.

Shin Megami Tensei IV

Had some false starts with the game (2 or 3 times it feels like) but eventually it clicked and I decided to go forward and play a bunch of other games in the series, even SMT 1, 2, and If.

Final Fantasy IX. Sort of.

I loved VII back in the day, was not a fan of VIII and really wanted this to scratch the VII itch and it did absolutely no such thing. So I didnt enjoy it much.

However, going back to it years later without that yearning for a similar experience to VII, I actually appreciated the things it did well, and I now think its a fantastic game.

Left 4 Dead 2 although it was more like months. This girl tried to get me into it, but I just wasn't feeling it. Several months later, I randomly decided to join one of the CE sessions back when they would play together. It absolutely clicked and I fell in love with the game. I eventually went back to play with my friend who initially tried to get me into it lol.

Another case is Skyrim. I tried to get into it like 3 different times, but just couldn't get into it. Even watching my gf at the time play it who was obsessed with the game didn't help despite me typically enjoying watching a significant other gaming. A couple years after we broke up, I tried to give it another shot and I actually started liking it and made some decent progress in the game. Never finished it though.

Not quite the same game, but i tried Persona 3 FES around the time Persona 5 came out. I mostly liked it, but the school sim and time management aspects put me off.

Then after years of hype and following some of the english VAs on twitter, i gave in and got P5R. This time everything clicked and i loved it.

Years would be the wrong timeframe for it, but the closest was Dark Souls 1 and Morrowind.

DS1 I was fine with until I accidentally hit the blacksmith very early in the game (accidentally hit R2 when I put the controller down), then found out how many souls it would cost to stop him from being aggressive. Because of how early in the game I was and the fact I had been struggling (thus no confidence I could amass the amount of souls needed to get him to calm down), I ended up quitting for a few months. 2nd attempt went much smoother and ended up completing that run.

As for Morrowind, it was because I didnt really understand the game. Didnt put any starting skills into short blades and didnt know a good way to go about getting a weapon, so I was constantly dying to even kwama foragers since i couldnt land a hit. Similar to DS I stopped playing for a few months, went back in, stuck around in the starting town a lot longer, and was able to do the Fargoth quest to get enough money to buy a new starting weapon and had a much better experience from that point on.

FF11
FF15
Tactics Ogre

I Think thats it
11 I was playing other mmos
15 I would play till around hammerhead get bored put it away.
Tactics Ogre had the ps1 version. I found it too difficult after playing Final Fantast tactics. I sold it. I think in all my 2015 I bought the psp version. I loved it. It had the right difficulty. While Reborn is playable. Boss cards, and removal of random battles were a bad idea.

Not years later, but I tried Genshin Impact closer to when it launched and something about the controls just didn't click for me. Then I gave it another try a couple months later and it just *worked*, and totally hooked me in the process. Been a daily player since, having missed only one or two logins since December of 2020~

Don't have any. I'm too stubborn. Closest would be a bunch of Zelda games because I played them as a kid and and would go until I got stuck, then play other stuff until I eventually came back when I was older and cleared them without much trouble.

I don't know if the Switch version of Mortal Kombat 1 counts here, but I'm going to post it anyway because I can't think of any other examples. I bought it at launch and the Switch version was absolutely horrid. Genuine buyer's remorse and I grimaced every time I saw its case on my wall. Went back to it a little over a year later after they reset the Invasions seasons and it turns out they had put a lot of work into fixing it, and it felt like a completely different game that I now play every day.

Earthbound

When I first got it, I was expecting a more traditional RPG with an overworld, so I wasn't in the headspace for it.

Played it again a few years later after I kind of grew out of JRPGs and loved it.

Surprisingly (because I consider it one of my all time favorite games and series), I didnt much care for Pikmin the first time I played it.

Hell, I probably wouldnt have even given it a second look if you didnt need to have a save file from the game on your memory card to unlock a trophy in Melee. So. Thank goodness for that.

Also, I remember not loving Metroid Prime the first time I played it, but then I bought it on a whim when I saw it for like four bucks at GameStop and ended up loving it.

FF7 was my first big RPG as a kid. I only made it an hour or two in and while some stuff was cool I wasn't sure about turn based combat and so many menus. Then 4 years later it became one of my favorite games of all time.

Other stuff has just not clicked for me, but the gap is usually only a few months. Alien Isolation was a year later. I just played Zelda: Minish Cap for the first time. I started it 4 months ago and just was not in the mood for a Zelda game at that time. Was 2 dungeons deep, so I just restarted it last week and beat the whole thing. Loved it.

Dark Souls 2. It wasn't quite that I didn't get it as much as I didn't have the urge to finish it, it didn't quite click to an obsession. I did a second run a bit later and got further, but it still felt like a bit of a slog, although I did like some of the areas I didn't get to the first time and got some of those "aha!" moments when I looped back onto myself in the Lost Bastille. A third attempt down the line was the one that finally clicked and I actually still have about 50 more hours in 2 than in 1.

Today, I have over 1000 hours split between Dark Souls, Bloodborne and Elden Ring and I'm currently going through Shadow of the Erdtree on a fresh character after the final boss handed my ass to me at release.

Had more then a few through the years but the most recent one I can think of is Diablo IV.

Got it when it released, beat the story and then deleted it as it didnt have the same feel to it that I got from 3.

Fast forward to a month ago, my health going downhill a little more and now Diablo IV is easier to play ( as I have increased difficulty using my right hand) and is a little more enjoyable if I take a non-serious route with it.

A lot, but some are:

Terraria - I was stuck on the first mech bosses. Needed the wiki, to use potions, and to reforge.

The souls series - First one was Demon's Souls. Then DS1. Then DS2. Then DS3. Bloodborne was even in there. I didn't beat one until DS3 then I went back for the others. I tried so many times but could only ever beat 1-1 and 2-1 in Demons Soul's when it came out.

Crusader Kings 3 - I needed to watch several hours of videos to get how everything worked and to enjoy it
