The opening part (first 1-3 hours) of HL is classic. IMO, it gets worse as you go further.

HL2 starts off with a cool start and then is much more even throughout (mix of high energy and spaces to breath), with perhaps it's most iconic moment coming near the end.

Half-Lifes better as a FPS

Half-Life 2s more varied in its gameplay and how it builds its set pieces (feels like its meant to showcase the physics engine which was nuts at the time)
