No, though I'm mainly basing that on his early years and the fact that Bob Barker basically IS The Price is Right to me (and yes, I'm aware he wasn't the first host either). I haven't watched the show in like 15 years, so I have no idea if he's vastly and dramatically improved since the beginning, or if he's basically more or less the same and I'd still dislike him.

Also for the record, I hate the idea of a Let's Make a Deal without Monty Hall, a Jeopardy without Alex Trebek, or a Wheel of Fortune without Pat Sajak.

I'm also willing to take that even farther and say that they should never do The Newlywed Game or Card Sharks without Bob Eubanks, Press Your Luck without Peter Tomarken, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire without Regis Philbin, or Double Dare without Marc Summers. There's probably a few others I'd have strong opinions about (I used to watch a LOT of game shows as a kid), but most of them are probably too obscure for most people here (do any of you even know who Wink Martindale or Jim Ward even are?).

Some hosts just become so iconic - even if they weren't the original host of their show - that it almost feels like sacrilege to do it without them.

Plus, you know, it would be nice to see people come up with actual NEW shows rather than just rehashing the same old shit until the end of time.

I don't even think Bob Barker was that incredible of a host. He was just "there". Occasionally reacting to a humorous moment. And Drew fills the same role just fine. In fact, I feel Drew can be funnier.

There are plenty of of new game shows. They probably mostly suck, but they're always being made.

Pretty much exactly this. Though, I have seen bits and pieces of more recent shows and my opinion hasn't wavered.

Password?

....or SUPER PASSWORD?!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1LEewlbOB0

Super Password is another show that my brain indelibly associates with one specific host - Bert Convy.

Which also reminds me of Pyramid. Which I associate with Dick Clark.

Though thinking about it, the real problem at this point is that the role of the host is possibly the most important part of any game show - a really charismatic host can make almost any game successful, while a bad host can ruin even an otherwise well-thought out concept. But these days producers would probably start casting Instagram or TikTok influencers to be host.

They're not even nearly as prolific as they used to be. It's like soap operas - the genre as a whole sort of lost its niche over the last couple decades.

At this point, new shows mostly only show up on the Game Show Network. But that's a tiny audience at best, so the shows are being made on really small budgets and with minimal effort.

That being said, yeah, new game shows still get made. Most of them don't seem like good shows though.

No. He's actually thinner now than in that first pic (as of the last season of TPIR at least)

I actually never cared for the price is right in general. The rules are nonsensically imbalanced and it's basically a thirty minute not so subtle collection of advertisements. The jumping and lights and silly games just distracts you from the infomercials. Guerilla QVC indoctrination for kids basically

I don't even know if I've actually sat through a single Drew episode. TPIR was mainly a thing I watched when home sick from school, but I didn't get sick that often and by the time he took over I was almost out of school and definitely would've had other things I could do besides watch TV if I was home

That's what most game shows used to be - that's where they get all their money to give away. Either the prizes were products they were advertising, or the whole show would be "brought to you by [insert product here]".

In fact, that's why the other daytime staple show "soap operas" are called soap operas - because the first ones mostly advertised soap products.

I guess that has a lot to do with the way people consume television now. I do feel like it would be difficult to create something that would garner a large, loyal audience in the streaming age.

True. Arguably across the board - even YouTube channels tend to do far more poorly now than they did years ago in terms of view counts. If something isn't a short or on TikTok, most people don't have time for it.

Which is a large part of why I've been saying for years that the concept of pop culture is probably going to die for younger generations today (and their successors in the future), because they don't really have the same sense of "shared culture" that defined Boomers, Gen X, and Millennials. People today aren't watching the same things, and even when they are (like tens of millions of people seeing the same short or TikTok) they're not really retaining those things. There really won't be much to act as a shared cultural language decades from now, or shared nostalgia. Everyone is basically living in their own bubble of experience that barely overlaps with anyone else's.

It's going to be interesting to see how companies deal with not being able to just exploit nostalgia when almost no nostalgia exists. What do they have at this point? A Fortnite movie? A movie about the concept of TikTok? Skibidi Toilet: The Motion Picture (this one's almost inevitable)?

'Yes'

I had to get used to him, but he's alright now. Coincidentally, I shouldn't judge given how many different hosts Family Feud ended up with over the years.

It was the time slot for me. Smack dab in the middle of the day when you're more likely to be on the road from work or having to go pick someone up from school.

As someone able to catch up the 'vintage' episodes of Press your luck with Tomarken even though my era was 'Whammy: The all new Press your luck', I have to say that letting the younger generation get a taste of a game show is never a bad thing.

My current rating for Press your luck is as follows:

-Whammy-
Tomarken Press your luck
Elizabeth Banks Press your luck (because its too emotional and drawn out)

Some hosts just become so iconic - even if they weren't the original host of their show - that it almost feels like sacrilege to do it without them.

This is how I feel about Ray Combs, but Ken Jennings doing Jeopardy is somewhat poetic and now I feel like he should have gotten the gig sooner. The other end of the spectrum is Brooke 'put some respeck on her name' Burns, in which she was 'The Chase' for me.
