I had hoped that when I and the other relics around me finally reached 10k, we'd get our board and hold a vote there for new new user level's name. Always the same people getting there first. And I'd hope this time we'd finally complete the South Park-inspired pun and go from "???" to "Prophet". It's been proposed in the last few new level name votes but never won.

But I don't expect we'll see a name change anymore. We beat the internet. The end guy is hard.

I mean, it barely is.

Usage is probably little more than a trickle at this point, ad revenue has to be abysmal, and we mostly get thrown into package deals as an afterthought whenever one company buys assets off another. Red Ventures didn't buy GameFAQs off Viacom because they wanted GameFAQs (C|Net was likely the main motivation), and Fandom didn't buy us off Red Ventures because they wanted us either (Metacritic and TV Guide were probably worth way more than we are).

Probably the only reason no one's bothered shutting us down yet is because it takes the bare minimum amount of effort to keep the site running, and operating costs are low enough that we're not even worth shutting down to save money.

Got rid of politics board and politics discussion everywhere except CE.

The "hornyposting" where you can literally get modded for saying something like "I had sex" with no details at all.

That rule would honestly make the site infinitely better if they actually enforced it consistently and effectively. The Social Media Age has basically turned all online political discussion into a diarrhea firehose, and we'd all be better off for having a place where the shitshow is strongly discouraged.

The real problem is that it would work better if they didn't simultaneously quarantine CE, thus preventing people from going to the part of the site where you can talk about politics, which in turn encourages people to try and continue talking about it everywhere else. And because they don't really enforce the ban well, people just make tons of thinly-veiled political topics and continue business as usual.

Or, conversely, they could have not banned the Politics board originally, and then they could have funneled it all there instead of having it flood CE in the first place.

A lot of people either got banned or left the site entirely because of that which led to reduced traffic. I wish they would shut the site down because the new rules are absolutely moronic and made by people who have no idea about anything.

The rules changing is pretty much entirely fitting GameFAQs into the wider network of sites Fandom has and not because of much interest in doing something that clicks here. I've hung around here and the internet long enough to just mentally block out politics and sex anyway.

If I were to be entirely optimistic, a part of me feels like this site still exists solely because of its "historical" nature. GameFAQs used to be known as the definitive place you went for your gaming info. It would be a real shame if it just got Thanos-Snapped out of existence, even if it's largely obsolete now. Might also explain why the site is largely the same format as it has been for years with very minimal update.

I would just change it to match my local laws.

Simple things really, bring gamefaqs into the 20th century. Then it'll only be one century behind.

The ruleset is actually pretty wild. I don't understand how hard the pearl cluching is over "hornyposting" but mature language is pretty much open field. I still remember the day those flood gates were opened. Drug talk, maybe they just want to keep their hands clean of any actual illegal conversation and don't want to put in the effort to moderate it properly.

But, like, getting modded for saying you find someone (or even a cartoon character) is attractive? That's comically ridiculous.

I remember when I did a real detailed post on mushroom cultivation and my general progress on growing some awesome shrooms.

i dunno... eight or nine new buyers, with eight or nine new futile plans to junk up the place with even more ads, and we can get a dozen more years out of the websight.

I would probably be ? block if I never got banned. My first account would be almost 19 years old, that's about 7000 available karma or more when you consider they used to do boosts. I definitely missed some karma, but I don't think I would've missed over 2000 worth

Errr i've partially achieved it. my profile page says I am, but the number by my name is still 37 and i can't go to the mushroom kingdom.

It'll be a sad day when gamefaqs finally shuts down. I used to spend so much time here as a kid looking at guides and as an adolescent going to the boards. I've written just one faq on like the easiest topic just to say that I've contributed to gfaqs.

As for shutting down, while I don't get hits on my small set of guides as I once did, I still do, and daily. 31 people clicked my guide on 2004's Sid Meier's Pirates: Live the Life yesterday. 22 so far today, it's not hundreds per day as it once was, but we're not dead yet.
