if you're in a war, there's really genuinely nothing stopping you from just ignoring banned weapons.

the threat of other countries getting involved at that point aren't really much of a deterrence, doubly so if it was, say, a world war situation and they were already involved against you

Finland just left a treaty banning land mines so they could use land mines (on their border with Russia). You can just sort of leave a treaty if it become inconvenient.

Israel-Iran conflict unleashes wave of AI disinformation

A wave of disinformation has been unleashed online since Israel began strikes on Iran last week, with dozens of posts reviewed by BBC Verify seeking to amplify the effectiveness of Tehran's response.

Our analysis found a number of videos - created using artificial intelligence - boasting of Iran's military capabilities, alongside fake clips showing the aftermath of strikes on Israeli targets. The three most viewed fake videos BBC Verify found have collectively amassed over 100 million views across multiple platforms.

Pro-Israeli accounts have also shared disinformation online, mainly by recirculating old clips of protests and gatherings in Iran, falsely claiming that they show mounting dissent against the government and support among Iranians for Israel's military campaign.

Israel launched strikes in Iran on 13 June, leading to several rounds of Iranian missile and drone attacks on Israel.

One organisation that analyses open-source imagery described the volume of disinformation online as "astonishing" and accused some "engagement farmers" of seeking to profit from the conflict by sharing misleading content designed to attract attention online.

"We are seeing everything from unrelated footage from Pakistan, to recycled videos from the October 2024 strikessome of which have amassed over 20 million viewsas well as game clips and AI-generated content being passed off as real events," Geoconfirmed, the online verification group, wrote on X.

Certain accounts have become "super-spreaders" of disinformation, being rewarded with significant growth in their follower count. One pro-Iranian account with no obvious ties to authorities in Tehran - Daily Iran Military - has seen its followers on X grow from just over 700,000 on 13 June to 1.4m by 19 June, a 100% increase in under a week.

It is one many obscure accounts that have appeared in people's feeds recently. All have blue ticks, are prolific in messaging and have repeatedly posted disinformation. Because some use seemingly official names, some people have assumed they are authentic accounts, but it is unclear who is actually running the profiles.

The torrent of disinformation marked "the first time we've seen generative AI be used at scale during a conflict," Emmanuelle Saliba, Chief Investigative Officer with the analyst group Get Real, told BBC Verify.

I'm going to state straight up: the Left utterly failed on Syria. They did not communicate a coherent vision beyond "IT'S NOT OUR PROBLEM" and a million people died when it would have been painfully easy for the US to intervene.

We don't intervene in Israel killing Palestinians. We don't intervene in a whole lot of tragic domestic atrocities worldwide.

As it stands it at least looks like we don't intervene in these cases because we respect the concept of sovereign nations. But if we selectively intervene, "correcting" Syria but neglecting the rest, it exposes that we only do so when it favors national interests and we don't fear the consequences.

Furthermore, even the lack of consquences for the US setting up a no-fly zone there was questionable. Russia was flying planes there, with the actual Syrian government's permission. Do you expect them to just stop because some foreign, unwelcome entity says they can't now? Or would they do what any self-respecting country would do, and ignore the order, and then when you shoot down their aircraft respond with a strike on your military in kind?

"The Left" does not favor wild escalation like this. If another country is engaging in unfavorable behavior you sanction them, stop recognizing them, fund their rivals, etc. Like we do to Russia, North Korea, etc. You do not pretend like you own the globe and do whatever you want on someone else's land (absent some self-defense justification).

If that is not where the line is drawn, the line gets very blurry.

Why should they negotiate after they just got bombed to high hell off of probable lies? Would you want your country to negotiate after hundreds of civilians were senselessly slaughtered, or would you want justice?

I believe any country helping Iran (which seems to be none in particular) is within justification to pressure them to negotiate. But Iran itself is well within rights to try to inflict as many consequences as it can muster.

It shouldn't be taken for granted that they're at least willing to talk after ceasefire. Talking before one would be absolutely pathetic. You cannot just reward aggression, that sets a terrible precedent.

That first post was offensive enough with claiming that was the right thing to do, this one sealed it.

Oh, and Russia didn't personally enter the fight until 2015, 4 years after the revolution started in 2011. Before that Russia was only supplying weapons and vetos not fighting directly. So the russians wouldn't have been fighting in Syria in 2011 or 2013 even. Just an FYI.

Yeah I'm in the UK and the BBC is insanely biased towards Israel.

Every time a guest brings up Palestine on a news show, the host quickly cuts them off and goes "Israel denies all of that." and then changes the subject.

The actual coverage focuses on the hardship of the Israeli people and the hostages + how evil Hamas is.

Any sympathetic coverage of Gaza no matter how factual is considered anti-semitism.

It's awkward because there IS a legitimate history of antisemitism in the BBC, the Labour and the Conservative party. But that history is being abused to promote right wing propaganda or at least silence any opposition towards right wing propaganda.

I assume this is talking about the destroyed/scorched apartment buildings. I guess some of them are fake, however my Iranian friend's neighborhood was bombed the first night and one of the buildings hit was 3 down from her own apartment complex.

And before anybody gives me the Instagram response of "good, quit being friends with terrorists", Iran is a country of 92m (which Ted Cruz now knows) and Tehran has 6m. She is an atheist who works in an imports office living in the "dream" that Christo-fascists are pushing us towards.
