On one hand, this could allow them to do some deep-cuts and add more unexpected, obscure characters from Nintendo's back catalogue or series already represented. It would be excellent to see a bunch of older characters being given new life in the modern day, to help shine more light on Nintendo's own history. On the other hand, guest Fighters have become a staple of the series since Brawl and contributes towards the excitement of a new Nintendo game. That being said, I do feel like I'd be bummed if Sonic, Pac-Man and Bayonetta didn't return if only because they feel most most Nintendo adjacent of the bunch. If they do enough to tweak and improve the existing fighters (making Ganondorf not just Captain Falcon but slow, giving Peach new moves from Showtime, giving Zelda new moves from Echoes of Wisdom, etc.) and the newcomers are creative/fun enough, then I won't miss the 3rd-party characters all that much. But if they take out all of the 3rd-party characters while also leaving most of the current 1st-party characters feeling too much like they already do in Ultimate, then I'll be disappointed. Minecraft and persona are just popular IPs, but it was awesome seeing simon belmont in ultimate since classic castlevania was a huge part of retro nintendo gaming.
