What kind of monster hates Golden Sun?

Not a bad list, tbh

Do people still care about Lost Odyssey and Ni no Kuni in 2025? I never played either.

Breath of Fire III has its good points but I wouldnt have considered it.

Potentially controversial take: Wild Arms 1 has a lot of similar strengths and features to Golden Sun and I think its mostly a little betterexcept its battle graphics are really bad Actual 3D instead of really good Fake 3D.

If you drop the bottom 5 and assume Strategy-RPGs and certain kinds of Action-RPGs weren't eligible (but that Kingdom Hearts was for...some reason that probably doesn't quite make sense), this is a pretty reasonable list of, I dunno, 20 games that would be on a top 50 JRPG list with the remainder almost entirely filled by other games in their series? Works even better if you swap Live-a-Live and SMT: Nocturne (though the former is still a pretty good game).

I think they got a little lazy with the last few entries.

I like Grandia 2 and all.

But are we really okay with it being the 15th best JRPG of all time even if its only 1 entry per series?

Golden Sun has an incredible GBA aesthetic that I'm deeply nostalgic for but that masks the fact that they are just not good on a mechanical or writing level

I think the only decision that actively annoys me is the choice to include HG/SS as the Pokemon rep. And EarthBound instead of MOTHER 3 is definitely silly too.

This is actually one of the better lists I've ever seen. FFX and P5R in the top 3 and DQXI just outside good stuff

For all the griping about one per franchise, you know there'd be just as many people upset if they didn't put that restriction in place.

The writing I wont defend, but I think theyre among the last JRPGs to have actually interesting dungeon puzzle design

It isn't, even with this rule. Not only did it get ranked higher than superior titles (SO2, Vesperia, KH2, Breath of Fire 3), it also made the list while Lunar and Shadow Hearts got snubbed.

Grandia 2's a good game and most likely the best in its series (1 might be better, not sure), but it's not top 15.

HG/SS is definitely a good pick. Platinum - Black 2 is often considered to be the golden era of the series, and HG/SS has the added benefit of nostalgia due to being a remake.

Earthbound > Mother 3 makes sense too since Mother 3 not getting officially localized either holds it back or flat out disqualifies it.

I love Golden Sun, but it's clear that a ton of people dislike it for understandable reasons. Same with... Xenosaga ironically enough.
