Boomers: Hippies standing up to the military establishment. Civil rights and women's rights.

Gen X: Death metal and standing up to the Satanic panic and the rise of religion in politics. Fighting for a secular culture that didn't just cater to Christianity.

Millennials: Fighting for gay and tans rights. Freedom to express yourself however you want

Gen Z: Right wing podcasts and Maga. Bowing to the Republican party and working to undo the counter culture movements of previous generations

Not all boomers were hippies, not all gen x were into death metal, not all millennials supported gay rights, and not all gen z are maga. Im taking about the broader cultural movements of each generation.

They seemed better morally and worse practically for a good while, and now it's just all worse. I guess they really are the conformist quarter, only going with what the internet is pushing at any given moment.

This is a massive oversimplification, very broad strokes, I am aware.

Counter culture movements usually look at the current culture and see people being exploited that other generations just accepted as how it was. They dont normally seek to undo freedoms granted during previous generations struggle. Gen x did not side with segregationists to undo civil rights for example.

I do think that under normal circumstances, the wealth gap and anti-billionares was shaping up to be gen zs counter culture movement considering how many gen zers are getting screwed by that system. However, their counter culture movement got hijacked by those billionares to work for them instead.

That one's more or less a blurred line.

Like, yeah, zeitgeist-wise it started entering the cultural consciousness within the last decade or so, but depending on area you'd see more or less support in earlier years.

Like, I had medical courses that were teaching asking about pronoun usage back in like 2010, which was well before a lot of other places.

But I'm also in New Mexico and we had gay marriage a solid couple years before Obergefell.

Yeah, I don't dispute anything in your post, although I'd say medical courses aren't themselves a form of counter-culture. Gen Z has been a big player in vocal trans rights stuff, and furthermore it's still evolving culture war issue that has gone both ways the last many years, that happens to be at its conservative peak at this moment. So once again, the topic just a severe oversimplification that ignores multiple dimensions and favors the current moment.

The whole "Conservatives are the new counter culture" feels manufactured. Like they highjacked youth dissatisfaction and are using it for their purpose. I don't think it will last. Give the conservatives a little control (like they have now) and many of the people who see it as a counter culture will realize they have been had.

But than again I am an optimist.

I was being a little cheeky with that. It doesnt seem like gen z really has a counter culture movement they can call their own. MAGA has consumed that energy and focused it on beefing up the Republican Party instead.

I do hear gen z claim that maga is their counter culture though, so its not 100% cheek.

I think the issue is that young men are increasingly finding themselves in shit life predicaments and a lot of these young guys legitimately consider the counter-culture movement the way to save men.

In an alternate reality gen Z counter-culture would be anti-billionaire/oligarchy but those efforts were nipped in the bud.

No doubt young people who see things getting worse want an answer. Those podcasts are giving them an answer. The wrong answer. I could be wrong but something tells me things are about to change and allot of the GenZers are going to realize they got tricked.

All generalizing is dumb. Every generation from silent to the kid that just turned 18 has Maga and has people fiercely opposed to it.

I see it within my Gen X age group. I know tons of people who definitely swung hard to the right and I know tons of people that are super left. Just like I was in the military everyone always thinks it is redneck chuds but I knew tons of people firmly on the left in the military. I know tons of gun supporting owners on the left as much as I do on the right.

Also sometimes people stay exactly who they were when they were young and sometimes people drastically change. I watched that in my age group too. I watched some of the most independent kids in my class who were super laid back grow up and the moment they had kids became over protective helicopter parents who would sue the school and raise a fucking fit over the most minor things with their kid. Yet I watched others stay as calm and laid back as they were themselves with their kids and watch them go off unsupervised to play in the woods and creek and come home when it got dark.

These large sweeping generalizations are always dumb.

I feel like Gen Z did the right thing by cutting out the worthless middlemen that are milenials and just going at the whole problem themselves. No need for them to compare beyond yall are just miserable and insufferable to co-exist with

We made that bed and Gen Z were perceptive enough to catch on to the whole act

but, yknow, they spun so far off into an orbit that their efforts resulted in the same kind of worthlessness but at a much more extreme level (republicanism)

What does that tell us? Im not sure. Maybe humans are really just doomed to failure haha

If the start of the timeline had idiots in the cave, our generation contained the idiots who thought we could actually speak to the shadows on the wall

I think they already realize it that's why they are believing the claims of rightwing populists. That's why they want Trump to destroy the system without fully realizing the system he's putting in it's place will be far worse for them.

Satanic panic was a real event, but it was completely astroturfed by religious leaders who made up stuff to generate fear in people. Gen X had to put up with most of that fear being ginned up about stuff they were into, and occasionally getting into things just because their parents were afraid of it.
