Personally I saw the words "extraction shooter" attached to it and immediately tuned the game out. It's not a genre that has any appeal to me. Is the genre even popular enough to amount to success if the game doesn't bomb? I played a lot of Helldivers 2 and while extraction is a part of it, it's a minor part and only matters for samples. For ones where that genre is the focus, grabbing loot and extracting with it, and that loot becoming your gear for future missions, is the primary focus. The thing about making an extraction shooter is it this point we know that the quality of the gameplay alone isn't going to be enough to compete. A regular stream of new characters and cosmetics isn't going to do it either. You basically need IP and branding power, and marathon is unfortunately as close to worthless as it gets for Bungie when it comes to IP recognition. That leaves branding power and pulling something like a fortnight where you just become Ready Player One and fill the screen with recognizable properties, but I can't see Bungie doing that and I don't know that a battle pass with a master chief helmet at the end of it will be enough either. --- "History Is Much Like An Endless Waltz. I'm really confused. I only quickly skimmed this, but all the references to Bungie learning from their experience with the Halo series has my brain scrambled. Marathon came first. Hell, Pathways Into Darkness came before that. Marathon was a 90s FPS and was the Macintosh side of the Doom craze. I absolutely loved Marathon growing up, and even I wasn't old enough to really enjoy until the early days of Aleph One which brought it to modern systems. So... how is this Marathon? Why do I get the vibe that people are talking like it is a new series... I hate to reduce playing an alpha version of the next game from the team behind Halo and Destiny ...inspired by Bungie's latest works without any reference to the original thing whose name it is literally taking? Reading through about the gameplay, it doesn't sound anything like Marathon to me. This is my first time hearing about this, so maybe I am missing some critical context here, but it seems to me this shouldn't be called Marathon, because that's just kind of confusing now. --- "If you wanna win a war, you must serve no master but your ambition" - Illyria ... It's doing more to throw in the series lore but I'm mostly confused where this fits. Post trilogy? It can't be post trilogy because the trilogy ends in the final moments at the heat death of the universe. In existing lore Tau Ceti gets colonized and then wiped out in 2794. At the end of that fight Durandal leaves and never returns, yet this new game takes place in 2850 and he's apparently involved. So at best it's likely to be a bunch of corporations ("factions") picking over the abandoned remnants of those wars about 100 years later, but Durandal should be nowhere in sight unless it's like an offline backup that got left on the planet. It also can't serve the larger Marathon plot because the events that occur here 100 years later are meaningless to Durandal or your mission. Technically at this point you've already found the pfvor (spelling?) homeworld and they've unleashed their superweapon and ruined everything. So the only possible place for this game to have any meaning to Marathon is if it takes place on any of the doomed timelines explored in Marathon 3. --- "History Is Much Like An Endless Waltz. Infinite is mostly time jumps and alternate dimension exploring, I don't see how it wouldn't take place after Marathon 2. Also it would take about 90 years for the distress message the Marathon sent to reach earth so I would think this could potentially be the reinforcements showing up a long time after. Using shells as remote exploration vehicles. Could also just be Tycho faking us out by pretending to be Durandal. HighSeraph posted... Damn, one was successful out of like 10 or more therefore obviously we should just keep wasting time and resources making more.Eh, personally I hesitated on Rivals purely because I fully expected them to go in on gacha/lootbox monetization. I was shocked when they didn't. I don't see myself turning around on those. It's a deliberately predatory and anti consumer system. GaaS have their place, but mostly fail because of greed and incompetence. Game companies just see the oodles of cash GaaS make and want to get their version of that. But there's two main issues. First, if you want to break into a saturated market, you need some kind of unique appeal. A massively popular IP that will break into more casual audiences (Marvel Rivals) or a unique spin or just plain higher quality that's has so much more appeal that it can drag entrenched users away from the established format (Fortnite). The first is a heavy upfront cost (and the game still has to be solid), while the second takes a lot more development skill. Second, a lot of companies that invest heavily into GaaS don't realize that they're going to start cannibalizing themselves. If you have one successful GaaS platform and you make a second similar one or even use the same IP basis, the second one is going to eat some users from the first. I can't remember which company it was, but they did a heavy introspective and canceled six GaaS that were in development at the same time. There's no way that even half of them could have been fully successful. But you have companies so thirsty for that Fortnite or Final Fantasy XIV or Warzone money, or thinking they can double that by making a second success, that they'll piss it all away dozens of times over on the chance. ...
