CT has a better story, better characters, better atmosphere, but FF6 is much longer. Kind of tied for me. I'll never play through Earthbound, it's battle system is absolutely disgusting. I can't stand it.

Out of the ones Ive played, from my favorite to least favorite:

Final Fantasy IV
Final Fantasy VI
Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy V
Mario RPG
Breath of Fire

Some people count Zelda games as an RPG. If it counts, then slot it into 3rd place.

I think the only ones I've played are Super Mario RPG which I've beaten, and maybe an hour or so of EarthBound. So far I think I like Super Mario RPG more, but whenever I can get back to EarthBound, we'll see if it gets ahead as I get further.

Earthbound pros and cons:
+ Quirky
+ Good sense of humor
+ Interesting setting
+ It's not Square, so you can give yourself a hipster pat on the back
- Actually trying to play the thing

I found Earthbound was a game that continuously got better the more I played it. The first few hours are awful, with wonky difficulty and a horribly restrictive inventory system, but it starts improving as you get your second and third party members and by the time you hit the second half of the game, it's a pretty fun romp.

In fairness, it's not terrible, but it's got about four 90's RPGs' worth of irritations and QoL issues without really making up for them in other departments. If it didn't do weird stuff like having you fight old ladies who hit you with their shopping bags or having a forty foot sentient dungeon join your party and follow you until he gets stuck in the trees, I really don't think it would have been remembered at all. Ness in Smash Bros probably helped too.

Chrono Trigger > Earthbound >>> FF6

First time playing CT was a drag cus it was the ps1 port, but it was still a great experience. Def one of my fav games
I played Earthbound pretty recently when i got that snes mini thing. I love weird games so this was right up my alley
with FF6, I've never actually finished it lol. I got that around the same time as CT in one of those combo pack things. Not a bad game, but it never clicked with me

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

It has RPG elements. You level up (gain more hearts), you power up weapons (sword, bow & arrows, shield, armor), you have magic meter (which can be 'powered up'), etc.
It fits all the requirements for an RPG.

The Sailor Moon one was Final Fantasy-scale good IMO. I also liked the Ranma one, but it wasn't as great depth-wise. You kind of expect crossover games to be 'meh' (which I got with Ranma. Full substance wasn't there but still fun) but SMAS did some shockingly good things. Sad this one is always lost to time. Could be an amazing remade game.

Yeah Earthbound has a pretty rough start gameplay wise, only one character to hold items, only one action per turn in battle and the early bosses are pretty strong for Ness alone. Plus that area with the exploding trees is brutal. And then Paula starts super low level! But once you get her caught up a bit the game starts to feel a lot better.

Yeah, it was amazing. Even when I expected the game to end, it kept going too. Was a good length game. Plus, you had like, duo skills and such, and I feel like they really let you build characters. Venus is my favorite senshi and I remember purposely building her to being my best character, and she really ended up being my monster fighter. I don't know if she was always that good, or if I actually really did bias-build her to be the monster she was.

Either way, loved the Opposito senshi too. Wish we got more of them.
