I always felt Xenoblade X on Wii U was a game ahead of its time. Its take on open world exploration and combat was far more advanced and interconnected than its predecessor that combined with it being more subdued storytelling-wise and being a standalone game and not a true sequel that it ended up turning off a lot of people. Over time though it's become the cult favorite of the series and its now back in a half remaster/half remake capacity like Xenoblade Definitive Edition with new QoL improvements to help smooth out the experience for newcomers. The result is a game averaging 88% through 51 reviews thus far. 4 point higher than the Wii U original managed.

Nintendo Life - 10/10
Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition is an expertly crafted revamp that gives us all the bells and whistles we could wish for in terms of graphical upgrades. However, it's actually Monolith Soft's attention to clever gameplay revisions that impresses most here. This is X streamlined and modernised, carefully recast and reset in order to play better than ever. Additional characters, a new ending, and all that snazzy stuff is all well and good, and fans will be excited by the fresh revelations that occur, but it's in how everything flows so much better now that we reckon the hardcore will find themselves most impressed. And for newcomers a recommendation is even easier; this is up there with the all-time great sci-fi RPGs and an absolute must-play.

Inverse - 10/10
Xenoblade Chronicles X isnt a game for everyone. It doesnt have the kind of guided story a lot of RPGs do, and its dense systems can be a lot to digest. But its a game with a wholly unique vision, and only gets better the more time you put into it. Its hard to think of a bigger high note the Nintendo Switch could be going out on.

Destructoid - 10/10
Instead of going the easy route, Monolith Soft went the extra mile and added meaningful new content and quality-of-life features that actually improved on what was already a masterpiece experience. The Definitive Edition treatment makes Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition one of the best JRPGs on the Switch, and a must-play for fans of the genre.

IGN - 9/10
Xenoblade Chronicles X was already one of the Wii Us best games, and this Definitive Edition has escaped the destruction of its old home like the White Whale and settled down nicely on Switch. The quality-of-life improvements here are enough to justify another trip to Mira alone for veteran players, and its the perfect opportunity for newcomers to explore its beautiful landscapes for themselves. Its combat systems are deep and engaging, and the massive open world never got old to run, jump, or fly across. Its main story may not quite live up to the standards of the series, but a likable cast of characters and plenty of compelling side missions mean Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition is still an adventure worth writing back home about.

RPG Site - 9/10
Theres also a lot to be said about how impressive it is to play such a sprawling and complex open-world game on what is essentially a portable device. This feels like the Switchs swan song as Nintendo prepares to enter their next era. Its hard to not wish there was just a bit more new content here, but in all fairness the base game is overflowing with things to do. Despite some gripes, Definitive Edition was a great way to play one of my new favorite open world games. Im excited to dive in to clean my plate of all the remaining side content out there, and even play the multiplayer when it unlocks. There is truly no game like Xenoblade Chronicles X.

Xenoblade Chronicles X has always stood apart from the main trilogy as a markedly different experience, and the Definitive Edition does a fantastic job at bringing it up to par from a gameplay perspective, with the numerous quality-of-life changes addressing some of its more glaring flaws and making it a much more comfortable title to play. Occasional performance dips and obtuse gameplay mechanics notwithstanding, whether youre as familiar with the streets of New LA as your hometown or this is your first time upon Mira, Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition is an out of this world experience you wont want to miss.

VGC - 8/10
While its plot and performances sometimes had our eyes glazing over, there's still no doubt that Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition is an impressively vast adventure which has clearly been designed with the player's comfort in mind. With swift exploration, an engaging combat system and a wealth of side quests, things are already compelling from early on, and that's even before the mechs turn up and kick things up another level.

I was a little skeptical about this game, but I'm getting a little hyped now. Though... at the end of the day it focuses on the stuff in the series I'm not as fond of.

I had a Switch game voucher I needed to redeem before it expired and I had to decide between this or Xenoblade 1. Ultimately I decided on this for my first ever Xenogame. Im pretty much done with Monster Hunter now, so Ill probably start it at the end of the week.

I have intentionally avoided media for this release, what's the reaction to some of the redesigns? One of the only screenshots I've seen was that comparison from a couple months ago where they made one of the alien girl characters look way worse.

People have tried forcing 60 FPS in emulators and much like Dark Souls and Tales of Symphonia, the physics are tied to the frame rate and it breaks everything

I ran around at the start of Chapter 2 filling out the Affinity Chart, and NLA has zero nopon. This is an outrage.

This better mean there's a nopon village out there somewhere.

10 hours in so far and really struggling to enjoy this one.

I'm currently completely locked out of the main story because I took Lins affinity mission and you can't have 2 at the same time and I can't cancel it apparently.

I have to get 5 of a specific item from Nav mining and after running around for a few hours I've got 1/5.

I enjoyed other Xeno games but this I'm already kinda sick of this open world. It reminds me a lot of Xeno 1 (which makes sense) but it's my least fav.

Does the game open up more when you get the Skell? Not sure I can keep running around for 5+ hours waiting for this item to randomly drop.

Wow I guess I dodged a bullet on that one since I already had the items needed for that (but also I was 32 hours in lol).

I also took that mission and am now stuck on it and have not resumed the game since learning how big of a mistake this was. Probably just done with the game now

I'm really happy with the remake. Even considering how streamlined most things are now, it's still wild how much they crammed into the game, for better and worse. It's one of those games I could probably list out a ton of flaws but still play 100-200 hours and love it.

There's a little bit that you can get to with the Skell, some extra things you can do if you know a few tricks, and then a bit more when you get the flight license. You can get to a large % of the game on foot, depending on your desire to run away from higher levels foes.

I pretty much gave up around the 15 hour mark, was not having any fun.

The game rules but its nevertheless the weakest in its series.

I love this game like I love Dragon Quest, maybe XI specifically. I can pick it up for like 30 minutes or an hour before bed and make meaningful progress, like a little bedtime story. Its relaxing!

at least once youre running longsword+dual guns, aka melt everything+basically invincible

I like Photon Sabers a lot, too! But Longsword+Dual Guns is truly tough to beat.

I think this convinced me to not bother with this game. Which is a shame since I really love 1 and 2, but it sounds like X makes sidequests the main focus without fixing the things that often makes them annoying in the other games.

2 and 3 have great sidequests that are better than the main story in both imo.

Yes. My memories of its sidequests aren't as strong. I recall there was a lot more good ones than bad though, with the round 1 recruit hero quests in particular being good. There was still some annoying ones, and not a great way to sort them to the back/abandon them/etc. (or maybe I never explored that enough).

Thats fair. I actually asked more because I was going to recommend the game if youd not yet played it, haha. Since you like 1 and 2 so much.

Alternatively, if you rather disliked 3, I would have been curious as to why. (I guess I still am, if thats how you do happen to feel, overall!)
