You are able to live at your current income level in either country, so that is not an issue.

Ordinarily? The US. Less of a culture shock that way.

At the moment? I wouldn't touch the US with a 200-metre pole.

It'd be tough to integrate into Japan esp for me, but then again if I went to the US I'd be giving up things like universal health care, paid leave n such.

I'll take my chances in Japan, worst case scenario I can become one of those shut-in's that play anime games all day.

I recently grown an extremely strong desire to move to Japan. Watching interviews and videos about the culture really makes me connect with it on a strong level. It has a really strange feeling of home for me.

I know I can't speak the language yet, but that's something that seems attainable. The real problem is my lack of a college degree, which I hear is pretty much mandatory for any job, even if it's entirely unrelated to the field. My "High in the Sky Dream" is to work for NHK or some other production, preferably in music. Even with fifteen years of experience in the field, though, It'd probably still be hard to find work as an outsider.

As in my income is adjusted to put me in the same position that Im currently in? Or as in my income stays exactly the same as it is now?

Either way, my answer would be Japan. Im beginning to look into the logistics of buying a house there at the moment. Trying to decide if I want a holiday/retirement home there or in Hoi An. Part of me wants to do both.

Japan, easily. Honestly, if I had to live in a different country to where I'm living now, Japan would probably be my first pick.

Incidentally, the US would probably be one of if not my absolute last choice amongst developed countries.

Agreed. I very nearly did end up moving to Japan in 2022. While Im happy with the choice that I made, Id have nothing against living there and may well do so in future. The US was never even a remote consideration.

To be fair, you could live in Tokyo quite easily without learning Japanese. Further out in the sticks would be a different story.

I lived in Bristol, mostly.

And its not so much that I had massive issues (though Im not claiming the place had none), but now living elsewhere, Id need to compromise my quality of life significantly if I moved back.

Where I am now, cost of living is a fraction of the price while my earning potential is higher.

'United States'

At least these days and at my current age. Back in my youth I saw Japan as this gigantic anime and arcade wonderland, but the place has changed since then.

Co-incidentally, this topic made me think of that Family Guy scene where Peter was watching the Kpop girl group. Maybe I should have been keeping up with South Korea in my younger years.

You dont necessarily have to.

If you want any work outside of teaching English or working in a factory, you do. Most people in Japan only speak Japanese, and the average Japanese person probably has a western Kindergartners grasp on the English language. And I live there, I feel confident in saying that.

Of course, if you can find a way, you can live ok here. As long as you abide by their rules and dont fall into the toxic work culture.

In fairness, you dont have to teach English, so much as teach IN English. Of course, youd need to be qualified to do so, but I had a couple of decent offers doing that in Japan last time I was looking.

Some do speak English and some of those that dont hope that by being educated in English will help them learn the language quickly.

What did you find?

A few job offers at international schools that paid very well. In the end, I opted for Vietnam rather than Japan (and a load of other countries) but Japan was one I seriously considered, despite no Japanese proficiency on my part. In fairness, when I moved to Vietnam I spoke about a dozen words of Vietnamese and its not been a major problem.
