RTX 5080 reviews come out tomorrow. The gen on gen performance uplift appears to be underwhelming for the whole lineup, major benchmarkers have likened the 5090 to a 4090 Ti because its FPS per dollar is about the same. ~25% uplift for 25% more price

I'm on a 3070 so I'd like to upgrade soon but don't really know what i want to try to get. It also sounds like stock will be terrible so that might stop me from upgrading.

Maybe a 5090 some day, but I don't really have to upgrade from my current GPU for a while. I have a 4080 Super at the moment. It does a pretty good job at 4K but I usually don't get close to my 240 Hz refresh rate in games.

Nope. I got an Arc A770 Titan OC last year and it is more than capable of everything I need to do. I honestly can't see myself ever buying a new GPU as long as this one doesn't go kaput, and I'll try to stick with Intel's offerings if it does.

I was only going to buy a 5090 if I could get it from the military exchange like how I got my 4090 FE (no taxes or shipping, final cost was MSRP) to use for work and home AI/ML shenanigans, but I'm not so sure now with America speedrunning into a recession

I'm planning on building a new pc at some point this year. My current rig is showing its age.

When it comes to GPU, I'm not going to bother with the 50 series. Way too costly for what you get, compared to the 40 series.

I'm thinking a 4080 super, I'm sure once the 50s are out in the wild, we'll see prices drop a bit for the 40s

Id say theres a 5% chance I get an AMD GPU and a 95% chance I remain on iGPU for the foreseeable future.

iGPUs have come a very long way (especially on the AMD side, but even Intel have gotten quite impressive lately), and I dont care that much about fancy graphics as long as I can play my games. And NVidia are very expensive.

Your comparing a card that's been out for a few years and has had multiple update patches to address performance issues to a card that was just released and has no patches. Of course its going to look only 4% better. It might not get better by much, but I'm going with the assumption that once 2026 hits the performance difference will probably be around 20%. AI Frame Generation hasn't been fully explored yet, as its essentially a new technology.

The difference in product will probably be more similar to the PS3 on launch and PS3 towards the end once people figure out how to fully use the technology.

AI frame generation is a stupid fucking idea and a waste of development resources. Players want games that run well. Not ones that look like they run well.

Actually, it's not an "of course" at all. The 3080 smoked the 2080 Ti at a lower price and the 4080 matched the 3090 Ti (albeit it was more expensive than the 3080 significantly at launch). 1080 was 30% faster than a 980 Ti.

There's a reason reviewers are pretty uniformly disappointed in the 5080 and that is because it is not showing the in-class generational improvement we typically expect. It's looking more like the 20 series, though the 20 series had the feature novelty of hardware ray tracing support, while the only advertised locked feature of the 50 series is multi-frame-gen, which reviewers aren't super happy with.

I need something to replace my 2060 (mainly because it's the 6 GB model) and with tariffs on the way I might as well try snagging a 5070 FE. Otherwise I'll sidegrade to a 3060 12 GB or something.

If you're willing to drop $550 MSRP, and you probably won't get it for MSRP, then you might as well get a 7800xt or hopefully snag a deal on a 4070 variant. Unstable times as you said, never know what tomorrow's GPU market will look like. Whatever you do though, don't settle for a 3060 even with 12GB.

I'd guess it's because the AI tech probably isn't for gamers at all, but the frame gen is there to entice them on an otherwise minimal upgrade.

frame gen is largely targeted at 4K gaming to get decent fps. The problem is while FPS is important, generating extra frames only introduces latency in the response since now 75% of your frames aren't being generated by the game itself.

Plus as whole people much prefer actual performance increases by raster rather than these tech shortcuts that have been contributing to many companies ignoring optimization in the first place.

Despite the flaws with the 5000 series, it's still better to buy a 5000 series for a new build than the older series. There's just not much of an improvement over the 4000 series
