That's not news. Any one person can introduce any bill that they want to virtue signal with.

It should be noted wrt Colombia that they regularly accepted "repatriation" flights from us before and that the primary issues here were a complete lack of communication beforehand and using military flights to do it. Supposedly they caved on the latter, but overall this was not some huge policy shift for them and all of this could have been avoided. It seems the Trump administration wanted to pick a fight they could win.

So far it's not as outrageous as the first time...entirely because it's the same old stuff. I honestly think the country is tired of Trump, but just so happens to be EVEN MORE tired of the Democratic Party (even as of the 2028 election, anyone born later in '05 at earliest would have still known Biden as either VP or POTUS for most of their lives). That will likely not be the case in four years.

Without knowing what you're referring to specifically, there are some FBI allegations about MLK from the time when they were intent on destroying his image. Could be authentic FBI documents even if the claims are dubious at best.

As an American, with a feed that specifically blocks out most politics, with it showing up at the top of my feed. My guess is a lot at this point.

You did get to the meat of it, which is that at best, the model is a good incremental step forward with the current technology. It doesn't solve or enable much of anything new. The current hype is basically manufactured to get socialists around the world hyped about China and boost anti-America sentiment.

(The hype is not necessarily manufactured by China either - US investors love the discount that stocks are currently at and are taking full advantage of it, to the detriment of retail investors)

as a socialist they only thing i'm hyped about is the idea of the current ai bubble popping. i don't give a shit about retail investors.

So at the behest of feeling like I'm being gaslit by looking at what I originally thought were neutral news sources and finding out stuff a solid five days or so after it happens, what's probably my best news source to look at from work? AP News has been my go-to, usually, but I have had searches outright fail on me before (such as trying to see what was going on with Neil Gaiman until a couple days after the fact.)

you probably want a variety of sources to cover bias and blind spots. a euro outlet like bbc or france24 might help, as well as a middle-eastern or asian outlet

also re: deepseek, the primary thing that makes it unique is the efficiency of resource use and being open source. if it turns out there's a cheaper way to develop similarly performing models for a fraction of the price, then the american tech sector's ability to generate huge amounts of vc funding through ai hype diminishes severely.

Developing a competitor and then making it open source is a really funny way to crash another country's economy

because the technology and motives that underpinned them was still as wasteful and money hungry as the original. if an american or french or swedish or whatever company had come out with a cost and resource efficient competitor that shook the industry in the same way, i'd be having the same reaction. ai is still a suckass product, but if it's not killing the planet and sucking all the oxygen out of whatever space it's in then i don't give a shit if it lives or dies.

the crux of my point is that deepseek struck a blow against what i see as a noxious and stupid economic bubble, and i cheer it for that reason. the /degree/ to which it is more efficient, while somewhat relevant to me, is an afterthought. through the damage to the hype cycle of this over-invested technology, my hope is that we more quickly reach the point of investors seeing the limited applications of ai and it finally being consigned to a niche market.

It's deeply relevant to you. The new model is 25x cheaper. Which means that if the new tech and hype causes 25x growth in usage, it will be equally bad as it is today.

This is pretty much guaranteed to happen, based on previous hype cycles and the new arms war aspect. Maybe closer to 50x or 100x growth. But this is an afterthought to you. Joke worldview.

If I remember right, Google displayed different things in Ukraine and Russia when Russia took Crimea in 2014. Maybe they'll show a different name for the Gulf depending on what country you're in.
