If the Dodgers win the WS this year I hope they win something stupid like 130+ games, enough to cause some kind of pushback. Otherwise it's just a good season for them.

The answer is likely a cap, and the players union isnt going to have any of that. When the CBA comes up, they might push to strike before agreeing to anything that could limit player contracts.

They could still shit the bed in the playoffs because that's just baseball. Padres put up a good fight last year. Mets did too despite being a much worse team. Yankees were an absolute pushover for them though.

Nah it's not just the limitations that's the problem. It's the lack of floor. The payrolls of some of these teams are ridiculously low, especially considering revenue sharing. Just blaming the cap is a pro owner thing.

With a floor the Dodgers wouldn't be able to do this because there would be teams that have to spend money and sign some of these guys. The problem is there's such a lack of competition for these guys

Eh it's baseball anything can happen they almost lost to the Padres. They do have like the best ever pitching rotation though

The cheap teams are a problem, but there are still teams willing to spend as much as the Dodgers. It's just that players want to go to the Dodgers more than those other teams. They're poised to win every year and seems like just generally a great organization to be part of. So it's certainly understandable.

They probably win the division than lose to the Dbacks again in the postseason.

A floor would help the situation a bit, but it still wouldn't stop teams like the Dodgers from wildly overpaying to hoard great players. Both a hard cap (not this luxury tax soft cap bullshit) and a hard floor are necessary to fix the state the league is in.

The salary floor would make it so that the cheaper teams would spend more on their rosters to make up for the richer teams spending less. Plus, the way the NFL does their salary cap/floor, it's based on a percentage of the league's total revenue from the previous season, so the players always get (approximately) the same percentage of the total revenue every season. A hypothetical MLB salary cap/floor would work the same way.

Yeah this right here is the real problem. The Dodgers are a bigger market yeah, but the larger problem is many of those "small market" teams still make hundreds of millions of revenue and just run a penny pinching club.

The Orioles payroll is a fucking joke. The red Sox are becoming a joke in "being all in" on FAs and then doing nothing. The Yankees make more revenue. There's so many teams that could be competing with them, they choose not to. Because they prefer to pocket the money instead.

The Dodgers over-spending is still a problem, but I agree that the cheapskate owners pocketing money instead of putting it into the on-field product is the bigger problem. As a lifelong Marlins fan, I know what it's like to suffer through cheap owners and know before the season starts that my team won't do shit. Sadly, it looks like my other hometown team the Cardinals might be slowly devolving into a cheap team too.

Manfred is still a terrible commissioner, but speeding up the game, and changes to the base running rules to allow stealing to be 'easier' is the best thing in baseball for years.

Oh, I agree. In terms of improving the game itself, Manfred has been great. The pitch clock, the base changes, the DH in both leagues, expanding instant replay, limiting marathon games with the ghost runner (I know some dislike it but I think it's good), being willing to at least consider automatic balls and strikes (they're trying it in the minors), it's all great for the game.

But in terms of handling the players and the teams, he sucks. Bad.

Not really. Ohtani is on a super deferred contract so his actual salary for a season is close to the minimum, and most of the big free agents the Dodgers have signed this offseason got bigger offers from other teams but willingly chose to take less money to try and win a championship with Ohtani and the Dodgers. This is basically the NBA superteam model if there was no salary cap to restrict it and a much bigger roster to fill with great players. Even if other teams are willing to spend on or even overpay for big free agents, if they can't outweigh the championship allure that Ohtani and the Dodgers have, what's the point?

They keep getting all the major Japanese players. Not even the Yankees did that in their prime buying championships years. They got Tanaka and havent really got another major Japanese star since.

Not only that, they're making these deferred money contracts to lower the average annual value, which helps them minimize the luxury tax penalties they face for spending so much. Even though there's no hard salary cap in MLB, the luxury tax is meant to be somewhat of a soft cap to discourage teams from spending too much. So not only are the Dodgers overspending like crazy and basically monopolizing the entire market for Japanese players, they're gaming the system in ways that even the prime Yankee spending years weren't.

The Dodgers have shown us that the luxury tax isn't working as a soft cap to stop teams from spending too much, and the cheapskate teams like the Orioles and Marlins have shown us that league-wide revenue sharing isn't working as a soft floor to stop teams from spending as little as possible. There needs to be both a hard salary cap and a hard salary floor, and until that happens, these problems will only keep getting worse.

If the Japanese players and other free agents want to go to the Dodgers, you can't really fault the organization for signing them.

This right here is way overblown. Of the last 11 Japanese players to come over the Dodgers have gotten 2. Add in Ohtani they only have 3 players of Japanese descent on the team.

They did sign Hyeseong Kim, who is Korean, this off-season as well but that's still only 4 Asian born players

This is bad for the sport, but the baseball postseason is at this point so random it doesnt really matter.

The WC and changes to the format have made it all a complete crapshoot at the end, which is much worse. Baseball is my favorite sport, but the PS is basically a roulette wheel at this point.

You just have to get there at this point, then it can be any team left.

I don't love super teams, but I do think that the MLB needs to have a salary floor as well. So many teams can pay more and their owners don't want to.
