That was a "please don't burn down our studio, we're making it" teaser, not a trailer.

Bethesda isn't even the same company anymore. I'm not excited about ES6 because it almost certainly will suck when it finally releases in the 2030s. It's basically Duke Nukem Forever all over again.

I don't really get how people haven't moved on from Skyrim. It was shallow, dated, and tedious when it came out. And the main story sucks.

People always come back with 'but mods'. Every game has mods now and if it depends on mods to be good, it isn't

Eh, that's debatable. If a game is only good with mods, then the studio shouldn't get any credit for making the game good (and Bethesda is one of the worst offenders for this), but a good game is a good game, whether you use mods to get there or not. There's also a substantial amount of variation in which games have interesting mods, which is a product of how easy it is to mod the game (both in a technical sense and in terms of how the game is structured) and how much of a historic modding community the franchise/studio's following has built up (which is quite a bit, in the case of TES/Bethesda). In that regard, studios do deserve some credit for making a game that has significant potential to be modded to be awesome, especially if they've actively cultivated a modding community (Factorio, for example, integrates a mod manager directly into the game, the studio works with modders to solve technical issues that are totally irrelevant for vanilla players, and they've hired several modders to be a part of their team).

More serious ethical considerations aside (like employee abuse or all studio profits being donated to Puppy Kickers International or something) the only thing that matters for determining how good a game is is how much enjoyment players get out of it. Again, studios should be criticized for failing to make a good game is mods are necessary to have a good time, but that good time is no less of a good time because mods are involved in having it.

I agree with all those points but Skyrim was also a lot more unique at the time, it was the open world game before Open worlds were a dime a dozen, it was much more casual focused and got more people into gaming. It also has an unparralelled atmosphere, the soundtrack went a long way to giving it a unique sense of immersion.

Also nostalgia, lots of people were kids when it came out and are now well into adulthood.

If TES6 comes out and it's just Skyrim with prettier graphics I think Bethesda is in for a rude awakening
