This. Although brain rot exists elsewhere, so not sure if this will ultimately help, especially with Facebook rolling back anti-disinformation measures (not that anyone younger than 30 uses FB now anyways).

It's a massive hub of disinformation and right-wing brain rot. But sadly, so is all social media these days.

You're off by about 30 years. They're called tankies after the Soviets put down the Hungarian uprising by rolling several divisions of tanks into Budapest and firing at pretty much anything that moved. It doesn't get the attention that Tiananmen Square does because it was in the 1950s and at least some of those who were killed were armed.

I dont think its the worst. Social media has great uses but it has its costs and drawbacks. Tik tok was one social media app with a net negative impact imo.

Social media is a disease. Now all these people can go get a real job instead of just jerkin off all day.

TikTok gets banned, and an actual Chinese social network is now the #1 app.

And the First Amendment is you're allowed to say whatever you want without fear of punishment from the government or cops. It means they can't lock you up for it, it doesn't mean you're allowed to say whatever the fuck you want, and it doesn't apply to the INTERNET, which isn't the USA.

The world did just fine without Tiktok for thousands of years, and ever since Tiktok existed, the world has gone to shit. Ban it and keep it banned. Now move onto other social media, specially Twitter. Muskrat is literally threatening politicians if they don't agree with him, telling them he'll show everyone their DMs. He doesn't even hide it, he literally just posts the threats for all to see.

Luckily, no one I really know gives a shit, but the very few responses I've seen on IG (all from women) has been nothing short of pathetic.

A bunch of "omg what do we do now?" And one girl saying how sad she is, because she lost her 6k followers, that she only got from one viral video she made in 2020,and hasn't really used the ap otherwise.

This ban is absolutely a net gain for society.

The government banning something people used for their free speech is the government violating free speech.

They had a reason to ban tiktok that wasn't related to free speech tbh, if they really have a plan to shut down all of social media or whatever, it won't be as easy as it was to ban tiktok

My tiktok feed was mostly animators showing off small animations. I'm gonna miss it because my youtube feed is nothing like that.

Im likening it to the smoking bans that rode through the states a decade or so ago.

Well I dont think the government wants to shut down social media anymore. There are probably more social media haters than social media defenders in the government, but there are too many people in government who see $$$ when they look at social media for that to matter

The temporary ban probably saw more liberal tiktokers be locked out after deleting their app than right wingers

The "illegal activities" part of the ToS was tied to the laws where the servers were (California at the time, not sure now). It doesn't matter if [insert activity here] is legal in your country if it's illegal in California.

State laws are useless. Should only follow federal. Still was federally illegal though.

gamefaqs always made it a point to say they follow united states federal laws, not state, because it's too much trouble to actually keep track of every states laws and if said person was actually from that state or not.

this is why you've still never been able to actually talk about weed here, because it is still illegal at the federal level.

I only used Tiktok to be social when every other place was heated the moment. I heard the art lore problem that pervades it, so I stay in lying low areas. I help my family buy from there to support small businesses, as long as they're credible and honest. I would be for the ban a year ago until it changed me to say I could benefit for a while longer.

Against the ban, but I don't even use it.
