"I accidentally made one good movie when I was 25 and rode its inertia for the rest of my career?"

I was thinking about M. Night Shymalan, but then I thought about the Wachowskis.

Don't know about ultimate, but Neill Blomkamp is on this category

Wachowski sisters don't apply really since I at least liked Reloaded and V for Vendetta and they aren't really known for a huge amount else. Even Revolutions grew on me.

Blomkamp is a good call actually

If you wanna be super gutsy Kevin Smith and Spike Lee are two with movies with a lot of focus even if I enjoy some of their other work

Yeah I don't think you're gonna find a better answer than Shyamalan. It's almost cliche at this point.

I liked V for Vendetta and Speed Racer.

And Shymalan becomes good again when studios stop giving him a budget. He's definitely had more than just a couple good movies amidst the chaff.

Blomkamp really does seem like the best answer to this question.

The Wachowskis just make inherently divisive films, I dont think they fit. Also Sense8 is a pretty beloved show. And Shyamalan has plenty of good movies including one like last year, hes just wildly inconsistent.

Neill Blomkamp is the absolute poster child for this though. One great movie when he was 29, everything else middling to bad.

Debatably Michael Bay? People liked Bad Boys but have trashed every single Transformers movie

Shyamalan - agree Sixth Sense is his best of what Ive seen but he doesnt fit the criteria based on Unbreakable and Signs alone. Also enjoyed Knock at the Cabin. Havent seen a lot of his later stuff though.

Yeah, The Wachowskis don't fit for this. Aside from V for Vendetta, The Animatrix was good (or at least decent) too.

Bay has directed several critically acclaimed movies post-Bad Boys, come to think of it. Armageddon, The Island and especially The Rock were well received too.

Possibly, which film are you referring to?

What We Do in the Shadows is top tier, but he has some other decent ones.

I guess my thought with saying Shyamalan is not that he never made another good movie but his name is so associated with Sixth Sense that every piece of shit he puts out is going to be at least moderately successful because people will go in hoping that this will be the one that finally matches that. Hence the "rode the inertia for the rest of my career" part of the post. And the internet/social media has sort of made him the poster boy for this trend.

I also kind of feel that Shyamalans movies sell basically on the fact that whether its good or bad, youll get something interesting. And he probably has close enough to a 50/50 hit rate that theres always a solid chance of a good time. It is kind of wild to think that his only real commercial miss is Lady in the Water all those years ago.
