Time is in the midst of rolling out its year-end package, which reportedly will once again feature Donald Trump as Person Of The Year. OK, Time! Another honoree is Elton John, who the magazine has named its Icon Of The Year. The story includes the line, He has bested or evaded the four horsemen that cut down his generations boldest names: drug addiction, AIDS, irrelevance, and suicide. OK, Time!
John speaks about the eye infection that caused him to lose his sight, which he and husband David Furnish are hoping will be a temporary ailment. He also talks about his Broadway musical about Tammy Faye Bakker, which closed days after it opened: Its a shame for everyone who put so much work in it. But thats what happens when you take a chance. He also strongly criticizes the decision to legalize marijuana. Heres that paragraph from the article:
John now divides his life into pre- and post-sober periods. He has helped many people kick drugs and has offered to help many more. He is Eminems sponsor. He orchestrated English pop star Robbie Williams first stint in rehab. He tried, without success, to help George Michael. Its tough to tell someone that theyre being an ahole, and its tough to hear, he says. Eventually I made the choice to admit that Im being an ahole. Those struggles have made him doubt the wisdom of legal weed. I maintain that its addictive. It leads to other drugs. And when youre stonedand Ive been stonedyou dont think normally, he says. Legalizing marijuana in America and Canada is one of the greatest mistakes of all time.
Asked if he feels the same way about alcohol, he pauses, exhales, and asks Furnish for help. His husband, who is also sober and has already prevented the star from oversharing once during the interview, sits up on the bed and offers a balanced answer, suggesting that while alcohol is part of the fabric of society, there are studies that find its much less healthy than people believe it to be.

Out of touch, maybe. But making fun of age isn't called for.

Everyone ages. That will be everyone here some day. Maybe future CEmen or some equivalent will be calling you an old piece of shit for giving your thoughts.

Point is there is better ways to argue opinions than attacking peoples ages or any other physical flaws.

What I want to say about this is that the legalization of weed is not the biggest problem.

The big problem is that the amount of THC in legal weed is LOADS higher than what it was even like.. 10 years ago, nevermind what it was like in the 60's when "the hippy's" were all about it.

The amount of THC in the products is increasing and the science there is showing that it is really bad for developing brains in particular. I think it needs to be more regulated to get the THC amounts lowered, just to make it safer in general.

Also, I hate the gateway drugs arguement. That is a very individual thing. Some people have highly addictive personalities/behaviours, sure. That doesn't mean if they smoke a bit of weed, suddenly they're going to pick up a skag and start shooting up heroin.

In all my years of smoking and drinking (I rarely drink anymore after being a chronic alcoholic wanting to kill myself), I've never once had any crazy outbursts, unsafe behaviours etc on weed.

Alcohol on the other hand I've made a complete ass of myself many, many times. And I'd argue is a much worse drug than weed. You certainly don't think normally on booze, compared to weed.

Re: Jeff

that's nonsense

people want high levels so they have to smoke less, people seek a desired level of "high" it's also cheaper if a little bit goes a long way

caffeine is bad for developing brains, lots of things are bad for developing brains. staying awake 17 hours a day is bad for developing brains. that doesn't mean anything.

THC use by teens is also down significantly thanks to legalization.

I was gonna say, I work with at-risk teens and young adults, and while my own personal experience is of course anecdotal and I know that I work with at-risk people, the amount of these teens and young adults who are using dabs consistently and daily has increased significantly the last five years.

Studies coming out here in Canada are showing that increased THC use in basically forming brains is showing not just chemical changes to the brain itself, but literal physiological changes to the brain as well.

I am all for legalization and I think it is absurd that anyone would argue that we should go back to jailing people for using weed, but the amount of THC in the legal product is increasing and a lot of young people aren't using responsibly cause they don't know any better.

I live in a state that legalized it a few years ago and it ended up being a scam lmao. The only people who can afford to get into the industry are people who already have a shitload of money and existing ties to the legal cannabis industry.

Most dispensaries are inconveniently-located due to NIMBY regulations and their products are insanely overpriced and low-potency. The only people who go to them are rich old people, first-time users and people coming from a nearby state where it's not legal.

On a personal level weed had slightly helped with my anxiety and depression but it's not worth the hassle of going to a dispensary, the money that's ultimately wasted, and being able to enjoy an hour or two during evenings before falling asleep but with the disadvantage of not being able to dream.

There's having concerns and I do kind of see where's he's coming from, but "greatest mistake of all time"? That's ridiculous.

Weed has helped me a lot in life in regards to pain, depression, etc. For some people, it makes things worse, but you can say the same thing about anything one can take medicinally. Some folks can take certain medications while others can't. That's where personal responsibility and such come in.

That would require a lot of regulating because even on the legal market the listed THC percentage doesn't necessarily reflect what you're being sold. They send off samples from each harvest for testing but the amount of THC can vary from plant to plant or it can even vary from different parts on the same plant.

And that's not even assuming that the licensed producers aren't "shopping around" and sending off multiple samples to get the results that they want.

That's fair too. Not exactly an elegant solution for my personal concerns. Not exactly sure what you do about it, I just know it is a very VERY common issue with the clients I work with daily and we struggle with how to best support them to make educated decisions on THC use. (This is a me thing, I say THC rather than weed cause I'm not concerned about weed use in general, just the amounts of THC that my youth are using, which is far more often in dabs rather than general weed)
