Sadly, higher social disorder (not crime specifically, just social disorder) makes people not want to make the progressive social changes to fix some of these issues. So you end up with harsher "fixes" to these problems.

Even if you you think that there is a housing shortage, cities and suburbs are more than capable of building affordable public housing to meet everyone's needs.

Issue is that many neighborhoods will fight to the death to stop those homes from being built.

The homeless as a population have been dehumanized for a long time. One of the main reasons that people complain about "being forced to see homeless people" is that it's a reminder of the deep-rooted flaws in our society. It makes it harder to see the status quo as being acceptable.

The actual problem is that housing is commodified, that housing isn't made freely available to everyone. Even if you you think that there is a housing shortage, cities and suburbs are more than capable of building affordable public housing to meet everyone's needs.

Homelessness will never go away in the US because it's a useful dickensian way for the patrician class to say "see what happens when you don't stay in line."

I don't think there's necessarily a contradiction between recognising that homeless people have it rough and wishing they would stop irritating you. Not convinced the TC did anything wrong here. The guy was being a dick and (while I'm speaking mainly from a British perspective here) some homeless people can have a very strange almost audacity with how they deal with others.

I've got every sympathy for people who need help that the government refuses to provide and yet no tolerance for people who directly accost me for spare change, for instance. Or who start banging on windows when you're in your car.

There is plenty of stuff to get angry about. I say review all the stuff to get angry about. Be sure to include stuff like you do not have a trust fund and that you produce way more than you are being paid.

Now look at your list. If someone peeing in the subway is still near the top, you probably have at least one trust fund.

Public bathrooms exist. Being homeless isnt an excuse to relieve yourself in common spaces.

I think we should be mad at things like someone peeing on the subway because it directly impacts the people who need to use public transportation, as well as discourages others from using public transportation.
We should absolutely have better methods of reducing homelessness and disruption in general, but it's a bit crazy to act as if people can't be annoyed at public disorders that reduce quality of life of public infrastructure.

I say this as someone who isn't bothered by these things! But I know many people are bothered by it, and if we want more public utilities, you have to increase the quality so people not just use it, but enjoy using it.

You gotta do something about your victim complex.

Most harmless are harmless and good people. But it only takes a few bad apples to over a period of time before people just get fed up with them.

I recall one incident where a kind waitress gave a home person that worked some hot coffee. Only for said coffee to be splashed in her face. She probably wont be to sympathy towards them anywhere regardless of how people view her.

They're fucking people. People who have clearly been abandoned by their society, relegated to nothing more than a convenient scapegoat for the problems that led to them being homeless in the first place.

And my advice? Get fucking used to seeing homeless people, because those numbers are going to EXPLODE in the next four years.

Most homeless people have mental health issues. The decrease in facilities and mental resources per capita is a major reason behind the current homelessness epidemic.
