Do people not understand how vague this is?

North America? South America? Its all the Americas.

Canada is "America"
Mexico is "America"
Paraguay. Brazil. Chile. Argentina. Peru. Venezuela. These all make up the Americas.

Its like saying you are from Europe, Africa, or Asia. Doesn't really narrow it down. Where in?

That might be an issue in another language, in Spanish you'd have to say you're from Estados Unidos (the United States) or else people will be confused. But in English it's generally understood that if you say you're from America you're saying you're from the U.S.

As a Brit, I have said I'm European sometimes, depending on the context of the conversation.

We also often default to calling people from Canada/US Canadian if we can't tell, because Canadians will be far more offended at being called American than the other way around in my experience.

If I hear someone say theyre from America then its always meant theyre from the USA. Ive never had someone tell me what continent theyre from.
I work with a lot of Europeans and when I ask where theyre from theyll specify the country. Even the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish specify their country and dont say theyre from the UK

You're being hyperliteral. When TC said "It's too vague" they very clearly did not say "People won't know what you mean" his point was that "America" refers to a lot of different things. TC literally points out how many different things it refers too.

As I said before it's onpar with calling Singapore as "Asia" and pretending to not understand why that urks other countries in Asia.

Going "Well you probably know what I mean anyway!?" is missing the forest for the trees and terrible reading comprehension.

Imagine someone saying "Man it's annoying when I ask where someone is from and they say "MY MOM LOL!"" and you go "Well what they mean is their mother was pregnant with them and gave birth to them. You know that."

Idk why people pretend there's some fight over the label of "American". People rarely/never refer to their continental heritage outside of niche circumstances. National or ethnic heritage is the primary identifier for normal conversations and the USA is the only country with "America" in its name. >_>

Speaking of Asia, most countries here generally recognize the United States as just America and vice versa. Everywhere I've been, whenever we switch to English, I'm referred to as "American".

Shiet, by the nature of my work, I've run in to a lot of Australians and they also refer to me as "American" when ribbing and joking about stereotypes specific to the U.S. Globally, that's just how we're recognized.

If people asked what continent they are from, theyd say North American or South American (when speaking in English). They wouldnt use a term that could combine two continents to describe themselves. Same as how people wouldnt describe themselves as Eurasian.

This sounds like it is an everybody else problem not a USA problem.

If someone for the United States says "I'm American" everyone knows what they mean. It sounds like the "problem" the TC has is if someone from Brazil says "I'm American" people will think they mean the United States, and they will have to explain they mean the South American country of Brazil.

So the solution is to convince the rest of North and South America to refer to themselves as "American" and convince the rest of the world to understand that America is more than just on country.

When people from other countries yell about how bad America is. Are they talking about North and South America. You know what they mean. Also it is two continents to make this work you have to act like it is one. Also the dive between North and South America is one of the best ones we have. Much better than Europe and Asia .
