Controlling something like Covid when each state only has a couple dozen cases at any given time? That's not so hard. You can effectively track contacts, keep on top of testing people that are at higher risks of infection, provide supports as needed to people who have to isolate to avoid spreading it, and other things that work well for keeping total cases down. When each state has several thousand active cases, though, that becomes pretty much impossible without actually instituting a full martial lockdown. Contact/exposure tracking becomes pretty much useless when a typical day involves dozens of exposures for anyone that spends any time in public, testing contacts becomes mostly impossible, the costs of providing supports to help people isolate become untenable... Once the barn door is open, it's a significant amount of work to get all of the horses back in. Trump missed that window for early intervention. He downplayed the severity of the situation, undermined CDC recommendations, and didn't control the borders in ways that might have helped to limit cases coming in (though, with the number of cases there already, the borders weren't that big of a concern). By the time he actually started taking it seriously, it was too late to get things back under control, particularly where his initial denial and undermining of recommendations mean many people were actively resisting those recommendations and countermeasures as a matter of personal political identity. He controlled the damage as best he could, but he did so without ever admitting that he'd made mistakes or being willing to take more drastic measures, all of which kept his efforts from really being effective. By the time Biden took office, Covid had been running rampant in the US for 10-11 months. Obviously, he wasn't going to be able to wrangle that. All he could really do was keep the vaccine rollout moving (hampered by anti-vaxx sentiments, though I'll freely admit Trump tried to address those, even if those efforts fell flat because of his previous efforts to discredit the CDC) and try to mitigate the harm as things tried to return to normal post-vaccine. Border closures wouldn't have changed much, efforts to more drastically lock things down would have been met with extreme resistance, and everything else he did was still be undermined by inconsistent state responses (particularly red states, since between Trump's dismissal of the issue and the GOP policy of opposing blue presidents on everything, not doing anything about Covid became the official Republican position). Could he have done more? Maybe. Did he do a reasonable job of wrangling the mess he inherited? About the best I think anyone could expect. Most of the criticisms I've had of the US' Covid response from '21 onward have been directed at individuals and state governments, more so than federal measures. --- This is my signature. Controlling something like Covid when each state only has a couple dozen cases at any given time? That's not so hard. You can effectively track contacts, keep on top of testing people that are at higher risks of infection, provide supports as needed to people who have to isolate to avoid spreading it, and other things that work well for keeping total cases down. When each state has several thousand active cases, though, that becomes pretty much impossible without actually instituting a full martial lockdown. Contact/exposure tracking becomes pretty much useless when a typical day involves dozens of exposures for anyone that spends any time in public, testing contacts becomes mostly impossible, the costs of providing supports to help people isolate become untenable... Once the barn door is open, it's a significant amount of work to get all of the horses back in.Trump missed that window for early intervention. He downplayed the severity of the situation, undermined CDC recommendations, and didn't control the borders in ways that might have helped to limit cases coming in (though, with the number of cases there already, the borders weren't that big of a concern). By the time he actually started taking it seriously, it was too late to get things back under control, particularly where his initial denial and undermining of recommendations mean many people were actively resisting those recommendations and countermeasures as a matter of personal political identity. He controlled the damage as best he could, but he did so without ever admitting that he'd made mistakes or being willing to take more drastic measures, all of which kept his efforts from really being effective.By the time Biden took office, Covid had been running rampant in the US for 10-11 months. Obviously, he wasn't going to be able to wrangle that. All he could really do was keep the vaccine rollout moving (hampered by anti-vaxx sentiments, though I'll freely admit Trump tried to address those, even if those efforts fell flat because of his previous efforts to discredit the CDC) and try to mitigate the harm as things tried to return to normal post-vaccine. Border closures wouldn't have changed much, efforts to more drastically lock things down would have been met with extreme resistance, and everything else he did was still be undermined by inconsistent state responses (particularly red states, since between Trump's dismissal of the issue and the GOP policy of opposing blue presidents on everything, not doing anything about Covid became the official Republican position).Could he have done more? Maybe. Did he do a reasonable job of wrangling the mess he inherited? About the best I think anyone could expect. Most of the criticisms I've had of the US' Covid response from '21 onward have been directed at individuals and state governments, more so than federal measures. </quote> ... Copied to Clipboard!
