Blackcurrant is barely known in the US because it was banned in the US until 1966, with some states continuing the ban into the 2020s. Blackcurrant is one of the hosts of white pine blister rust, so the plant was banned to protect American timber interests. As a result, most purple candies & drinks sold in the US are grape-flavored. --- Minutus cantorum, minutus balorum, Minutus carborata descendum pantorum. ... Copied to Clipboard!

It's purple-flavored. I'd say grape, but let's be honest, that shit doesn't taste like any grape I've ever eaten. Same with orange flavor. And "strawberry" flavor. And "banana" flavor. And "root beer" flavor. None of those things taste like what they're claiming to be. They're like their own alternate universe versions. --- "Wall of Text'D!" --- oldskoolplayr76 "POwned again." --- blight family ... Copied to Clipboard!

I bought a box of 64 different flavors of drink mix powder. Lots of common flavors (grape, orange, strawberry, lemonade, etc), and some unusual ones (rum, yogurt, tomato, elderflower, mango chilli). The flavor I'm trying tonight is blackcurrant. It's... kinda gross. It's sort of a mix of berry and soap. --- Minutus cantorum, minutus balorum, Minutus carborata descendum pantorum. ... Hejiru posted... Well apparently, banana artificial flavor tastes different because its based on a different species of banana than we eat today. The original banana died out in the 50s or something IIRC. This is true. The main banana used to be the Gros Michel, but the one we have now is the Cavendish: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gros_Michel https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cavendish_banana And the banana we eat today is sort of in the process of dying off as well, because there's currently an unstoppable fungus wiping out crops. Which is going to be utterly devastating to the banana industry, because they don't have a good replacement right now. Of all the fungus-resistant strains they have, none of them taste close enough to the Cavendish, and the one that does doesn't look right, and they've done studies where people refuse to eat them because of it. It's been something that's been an issue for more than a decade now. I remember first reading about it way back when Cracked.com was still a site worth visiting: https://www.cracked.com/personal-experiences-2216-6-reasons-bananas-are-brink-extinction.html --- "Wall of Text'D!" --- oldskoolplayr76 "POwned again." --- blight family ... Bananas are extremely difficult to breed because the kind we prefer to eat are triploid, which means it has three sets of chromosomes. Because of this, they have no seeds and can only reproduce by cloning. This is also why they are so susceptible to diseases such as Panama disease, because they are all genetically identical. (The same issue with lack of genetic diversity in cloned potatoes resulted in the death of over 1 million people in the Irish Potato Famine.) Wild bananas are either diploid (2 sets of chromosomes) or tetraploid (4 sets), so they can produce seeds and thus can be bred to improve their characteristics just as we do with crops like corn and wheat.
