Why do people live in florida at this point? Between storms that often ravage areas, the crazy wildlife and the somehow even more insane nutjobs living there inside and outside the political spectrum it just seems like hell.

But on a serious note, hurricanes are one of the few weather events that will actively make a person wish they knew where Amazon's warehouses are located. When you were a kid, you would never watch a hour of the weather channel. As an adult with a shipping order, you likely have the channel on speed dial.

To be honest, hurricanes are usually only really bad if you live right on the coast, and the state is beautiful 95% of the time.

Mind you, I don't live in Florida, but I have relatives on my wife's side of the family who do, and we've been there to visit several times.

There's also the fact that everywhere usually has at least something wrong with it.

Don't like hurricanes? You can always move inland... where you might have to deal with tornadoes instead. Or you can move west... and then potentially deal with mudslides, wildfires, and earthquakes. You could always move far north, but then you're dealing with frigid winters and blizzards, or you could aim for places with lethal heatwaves, ridiculous humidity, dust storms, regular flooding, and so on. Hurricanes are a dramatic form of property damage, but things like lightning, water damage, frozen pipes, mold, termites, and other less obvious things can do a lot of damage as well (and they'll get worse if you ignore them). You're not really "safe" anywhere.

And that's just nature. You also have to worry about things like the economy, crime, access to vital services... there are places in the US where you're relatively safe from extreme weather, but you're in the middle of nowhere with no stores, no income, and no people around. Which will be great for some people, but hell for others. And once you move outside the US, then you're adding alternative cultures and different legal systems into the mix.

Some people live in Florida because it's what they're used to, or because they don't really know anything else. Some people live there because they've already lived other places, and still consider it better than the other places they've been, even with the occasional major hurricane.

It's also not necessarily a pleasant one, when you consider hurricanes like Sandy were described as "once in a century" storms as well. It implies that, even if you're feeling safe, there's always the possibility that you're due for a major slam sooner or later.

It went from cat 1 to 5 quickly.

My region didn't have a single tornado for centuries, if ever. Five years ago, a tornado caused destruction a few kilometers from my house. No one died, but a little girl almost did. Her father grabbed her as she was flung in the air. Several apartments were destroyed and part of a school's roof collapsed. It was a big deal. Two years later, it happened again. This time a married couple died. They were deserving of a Darwin Award though, since they ignored the alert and went boating. The property damage wasn't heavy since the affected area wasn't urban. Since then, we've had a tornado every summer. It even increased to two tornadoes a year last year.

That makes seven tornadoes during the past five years in a region that never had a single one in centuries, if ever. This isn't a statistical anomaly. It will keep getting worse. It's caused by climate change. We've been having tons of floods over the past decade, which was also a first. When it comes to natural disasters, we only ever had blizzards once every few decades. The whole planet is going nuts because of corporations and politicians. So yeah, Tampa is far from safe.

From the NHC:

Milton is still a relatively compact hurricane, but the wind field
is expected to continue to grow in size as it approaches Florida.
In fact, the official forecast shows the hurricane and
tropical-storm-force winds roughly doubling in size by the time it
makes landfall. Therefore, damaging winds, life-threatening storm
surge, and heavy rainfall will extend well outside the forecast
cone. It is worth emphasizing that this is a very serious situation
and residents in Florida should closely follow orders from their
local emergency management officials. Milton has the potential to
be one of the most destructive hurricanes on record for west-central
Florida.

If you are in the Storm Surge Warning area, this is an extremely life-threatening situation, and you should evacuate today if ordered by local officials. There will likely not be enough time to wait to leave on Wednesday.

I know only one family in a mobile home in Citrus county who are as such given a mandatory evacuation notice, and don't mean to do it. Adults, I suppose. Except for the teenage daughter with them, of course.

My aunt lives in Seminole and she's staying put apparently

Just checked and she's in a mandatory evac zone I hope she makes it through okay

I lived in Orlando during the 80s and early 90s and hurricanes were never an issue. Now it seems like the city gets hit with one almost every year.

Probably not. I'm guessing he's trying to push the "the feds are doing nothing to help!" angle to give the GOP a boost in the election, and that kind of stops working if he lets the feds do something to help.

Fiancee is having her daughter stay with her in a proper house, her spouse and daughter remains to be seen. Really not liking the idea of them toughing it out in a camper, but nothing I can do but hope their skepticism, "meh it won't be that bad" is justified.

The last one I got to experience was when the eye died overhead as the hurricane dissipated into whatever fans of leftover storms went circling away.

I've lived in Minnesota most of my life and we've never had to rebuild entire neighborhoods because of frozen pipes or heavy snowfall. Not even remotely comparable. It's just cold. You deal with it.

Yeah, winter conditions suck in their own way, including plenty of potential for injuries/fatalities (car accidents, loss of heat due to power outages/burst pipes, people getting trapped, injuries while shovelling), but unless you get avalanche'd you're not dealing with the kind of widespread property damage and destruction a big storm can cause. Living in a place that gets both blizzards and hurricanes from time to time (Nova Scotia), blizzards don't hold a candle to what even the relatively mild hurricanes we get can do.
