Skipped Star Waspir to save for later as I've heard horror stories about that one.

Rakshasa: For such a brutal gold, the cherry is quite lenient. What do you expect when you're playing a Ghosts n' Goblins game? Routed in two intentional deaths in stage 3 specifically to get rid of birds.

Lords of Diskonia: This game was doing so well until the cherry requirement became clear. Win three times in a row at the mercy of luck from randomly generated maps and unfair AI. You just have to grind this one out honestly but it took an entire day's worth of attempts that kept stopping at two wins in a row.

Elfazar's Hat: Top tier game. No question. If this is what Pocky & Rocky games are like then sold. Cherry is surprisingly easy even if it looks intimidating. Rush three moons and abuse the dash, basically.

Mini & Max: I can see why this is so highly rated. The real reason the cherry took so long was because I thought going back to King Mittens would just trigger the gold ending again but no, you were supposed to do that. Wandering aimlessly through the game did pay off though.

Seaside Drive: This is hell on the thumb because of the drift mechanic. Although it's one of those hi-score cherries, what it really means is don't die on the first three stages. Not a horrible cherry but take breaks in-between attempts. Your thumb will thank you.

Campanella 3: For what it's worth, I got the cherry as soon as I figured out how to not die to the stage 2 boss. You are probably going to get it too if you finish this game because the only way you're not getting it is if you try to pacifist the game.

Remaining Cherries: Star Waspir, Cyber Owls

Elfazar's Hat is indeed pretty similar to those games, but not the same powerup system. What they have in Elfazar's Hat is almost similar to Shatterhand, though even that isn't a perfect 1:1

I've never heard of Shatterhand but I'll take your word for it.

Did something special for Star Waspir in that I streamed the entirety of going into it blind to cherrying the game. Thought I was going to be using the yellow ship to do it but the red ship had homing missiles that could provide the coverage needed while stuck in straight line DPS mode. The literal first run that got past wave three to begin with was the cherry run... And I was also on my last life doing waves 4 and 5 so those levels had to be done deathless too.

Cyber Owls is the last one and this is a doozy of a game in general. It's the in-game universe version of a crappy licensed game that Konami would make and release under Ultra Games. Kind of hilarious from a meta perspective really.

It is done. Cyber Owls took several attempts with Huxley's stages being the main issue as you're at the mercy of RNG for the missile.

But there's still more to do in the game, and it all begins with a suspicious name in the description for Night Manor.

Cherries: All

Did you look that up or find it on your own? I ended up not noticing that clue myself, but ran into the next one naturally.

I found the start of it on my own but looked up what to do in the Terminal room in Mini & Max it sends you to. I did figure out enough that I was given a Terminal code that sent me to something that is not in the 50 games.

After watching Para do the entirety of Night manor I might finally get over the subject matter and do it myself... but I really haven't wanted to UFO 50 for whatever reason.

Okay, I just got this from our Steam Secret Santa. Before I hopefully start within the next few days, should I initially play the games in order, or is it perfectly fine to just pick whatever whenever?

It sort of depends on your taste in games and what you hope to get out of UFO 50. I wanted to actually sit down and play and try to beat every game in the collection with my most sincere effort without just hopping around and taking small bites out of each game and then not playing them, and if that sounds more like how you want to approach it, doing them in order is great! But if you'd rather just jump around at will, that's fine too. If you're someone who doesn't mind, or actively enjoys, the jankiness of old games, then starting with #1 will be great, but if you're someone who is bothered by the way old games play, be wary of starting with #1 because a lot of people consider it a bit of a stumbling block.

It's fine to go in any order, but I do think the game strongly benefits from at least trying to commit to it. A lot of these games are hard (at first! but the learning curve will lead to you eventually getting better, sooner than you may expect) so I'd recommend a mindset of really sticking with a game, not just being like "oh wtf is this oldschool shit" and closing it out after 5 minutes and trying something else.

I do think going in order is kinda beneficial since it does kind of feel like a 'canon' order to me, like the games are kind of designed to feel more complex and advanced as you go...... sort of. Except for all the times they don't do that. Games #6 and #7 both feel 'newer' to me than game #46, for instance. But oh well! It's kinda neat. But I'm not gonna tell you you have to do that, or that it's super important that you do it. It's a good idea only if it sounds like a good idea to you for some reason.

Don't commit to beating Barbuta first if you're not feeling it. That literally chases people away.

Hot foot is exponentially more fun playing it with someone else in co-op - I got the chance to play some of these with my brother in local co-op, and this one actually felt pretty awesome that way (even though we lost on the final stage, it was really close to a first try win)

Bug hunter, conversely, is a very weird competitive mode where the bugs never turn into eggs - they still evolve, but it's competitive on who gets the most bugs. People get to take 3 actions on their turn then control shifts to the other player, rinse, repeat. Exploding yourself makes you lose the points from the kills on the move that made you explode, exploding your rival just makes them respawn in the corner when it's their turn again. This one would require the two players to both already know the game pretty well as he was new to it and I won like 25 to 9. But maybe he learned something for whenever he tries it himself.

I watched him play a bit of Avianos... which, surprisingly, is actually quite intuitive on how it works and now I'm excited to eventually play it. I watched him play Mini and Max for a bit and he got the first shrinking potion all on his own and then was in awe of the world just like I was. I watched him ragequit Star Waspir so, so fast.

I also watched him play Night Manor for awhile... he managed to run from the killer the first time, then explored the outside and got practically jumpscared by him showing up again, but decided, not this time, and used the knife on him to strike back... and then used it a second time on him and died. Yea, I like using weapons on the killer too but I think few people naturally think to attack and then run.

Came back through and gave Avianos a real go - first play to cherry without too much issue, maybe a few resets on the later trials. It may look complex from the getgo, and it sort of is, but not in a frustrating way; the difficulty curve is about right

One of the levels in the first 10 levels - I think it's level 8? - is one of the top 5 hardest puzzles in the entire game. I'm not kidding or exaggerating here, this is just straight up a fact. The puzzle difficulty in this game is not linear.
