Xeybozn posted... Other than the "per year" part (absolutely hilarious mistake), that's actually about right. The average new car sells for just over $48k. Right, that's the average of the sale prices of new cars this past month. People are choosing to pay for significantly more expensive models than they need. Last year I bought a new Chevy Bolt. It was right around 30k out the door, a bit more than I wanted to spend, but supply of the '23 bolts were dwindling. After buying it outright (which I recognize not everyone is in a position to do, so i'm fortunate for that) I was able to apply for a $7500 rebate from California and a $3000 rebate from my county. It took 6-8 months but that's 10.5k that was recouped in cash. That's not counting the federal tax credit of up to $7500. Now unfortunately my income wasn't high enough to qualify for that full credit since it's non refundable and can only be applied against tax owed. Still that worked out to around a $6000 credit. More than half the cost of the car (which already was in the 30k range, not 50k) was refunded within a year. Just took doing a few extra hours of research and not committing to a more expensive car than I actually needed. . The highest selling car right now is the Ford F-150 which has a suggested price range of 37k - 78k depending on the model. So you're potentially paying double the base price depending on the model and bells/whistles. --- ~C~ FD http://i.imgur.com/dGDfxaw.png ... Copied to Clipboard!

It's just a nice sounding idea that appeals to workers without actually promising any significant benefit. It would barely be a drop in taxes, especially compared to his $400 bil in corporate bailouts. But also there's near 0% chance any populist idea he has will get enacted. Either he succeeds in fascism and all these little things don't matter, or he fails and he's a lame duck president who has no reason to do anything popular since he's gonna die soon anyway. Obellisk posted... Maybe i'm just ignorant to the issue but this no tax on tips things has me confused. There are states that are allowed to pay tipped employees as low as $2.13 an hour. The justification is that they will still make a living wage once tips are taken into account, but that doesn't factor in any withholding that needs to be taken to meet obligations for FICA or Federal Tax Withholding so it isn't unheard of for the tipped employee to not receive any portion of their base pay because it ALL has to be applied towards FICA/etc. Scenario: Employee works 40 hours and would be paid $85.2 in wages. During those 40 hours the employee receives $914.80 in tips (which will vary wildly from week to week based on a number of factors) bringing their earnings for the week a nice even $1000. 12.4% needs to be withheld for social security 2.9% needs to be withheld for Medicare Some % needs to be withheld for federal taxes depending on their W-4 filing information (might be 0% if income is low and dependents are present) So that's $153 that needs to be withheld. Now my understanding (which might not be 100% accurate and might vary from state to state?) is that the employee would receive a "paycheck" for $0.00. The employee would not be required to pay the employer the remaining $64.80, but the employer would have to keep track and roll that deficit forward to the next "paycheck". Let's imagine at least some of that is wrong, but I think the general principle is correct. The end result being that it is very possible to earn enough tips in that low wage situation that you effectively no longer have a paycheck, just a statement letting you know that your entire wages (such as they are) got sent to the government. And then you, the employee still need to keep track of how much they are receiving throughout the year so they can (A) report it accurately and (B) make sure they set aside enough of it to pay federal taxes on it (preferably 4x during the year as quarterly prepayments so they don't get penalized for NOT making quarterly payments) . So it becomes a huge mess. And when you have a predominately young and financially illiterate demographic you have a recipe for disaster. . But it's true that the proposal to not tax tips doesn't really fix that. The proposal would be to not federally tax tips, but it would still be subject to social security and medicare which would STILL be enough to eat the entire paycheck in that $2.13 scenario. It also doesn't do anything for the poorest people who's total income is already too low to be above the threshold to even OWE federal taxes. It would do the most good for people who are making decent money AND receiving tips versus the people who are actually struggling to survive. It's also why both campaigns brought up the issue in Nevada, a state that has a $12 minimum wage for both tipped and non-tipped employees and a state that has a massive hospitality industry in Vegas so many people there will actually see a reduction in taxes as a result of the change. No so much in Alabama and Georgia which both use the $2.13 federally mandated minimum (as well as a dozen other states). Not sure if that provides helpful clarification, but it's also why the difference between Trump and Harris is still important. Trump said "No Tax on Tips", Harris said "Increase Minimum Wage and No Tax on Tips" Now i dont know if this would include pulling the tipped minimum wage up to match the untipped wage (7.25 federally atm) or if they would still be leaving a divide between the two. But either way the change to minimum wage would be doing significantly more heavy lifting for those who need relief the most. --- ~C~ FD http://i.imgur.com/dGDfxaw.png ... Copied to Clipboard!

Xeybozn posted... Other than the "per year" part (absolutely hilarious mistake), that's actually about right. The average new car sells for just over $48k.I mean... https://www.ford.com/ Ford has three cars that start around $30k. https://www.tesla.com/modely Tesla Model Y starts at $31,490. Listing a Tesla specifically, because among electric cars only Tesla has a well-developed cross-country grid of super-chargers (so with any other electric car you would be limited in how far you could go on a road trip). And this is just the official asking price--if you wait for the right time of year (typically when the models for the next year are about to be shipped) you can usually get a decent discount. Like...when I bought a Ford 14 years ago, the official asking price was like...I wanna say $17,000, but I paid $13,000. Scale that up for inflation, and I would imagine I could probably shop around and get something for $23,000 today if I did it at the right time of year and haggled a bit. --- Yes, of course, you can get something bigger and more expensive, you can buy a luxury brand, you can get a sports car, an SUV, a high horsepower flatbed truck. You can pay more for extras that are not default on all versions of a model. So I could totally believe that factoring in people who buy like...SUVs from luxury brands with all the extras is going to bring the "average" price up. But like...if you're on a budget, you can definitely get a new car for much cheaper. --- Cats land on their feet. Toast lands peanut butter side down.
