Power scaling has caused so many flame wars that back in the day people used to get modded for trying to start them in fact, one old bait was "Shiki can kill servants"
Shipping has caused terrorist threats, scripts being stolen and held for ransom if the studio didn't support a ship and some shows to this day have VAs and actors harassed over shipping decisions oh and caused burnings

I say shipping by far

I can't imagine anything ever being worse than Digimon Powerscaling.

Sure, Shipping wars are a sign of brainrot for the people taking part in them, but when I read about some powerscaling stuff I can feel my brain rot in realtime.

But i agree, some ship can have ultra brainrot (usually incest or questionable age gap) but overall power scaling can bring about serious rows of shitposts especially in series where powers are abstract or situational like jojo.

Shippers are more insane at the extreme end. However, powerscalers suffer from more brain rot overall.

I think shipping has more extreme fanatics but powerscalers are more "brainrot" as in wasting their time since I'd say creators generally put more thought into the chemistry and relationship of their characters compared to creators caring about the realistic physics and consistency of power levels of who's stronger than another. Both are irrationally obsessed though.

Shipping I am biased for, power scaling, neutral. But are there really not any destructive fans outside these groups?

(like romance anime where the central question is who end up with who, or dbz which hss power scaling built into the plot)

I'd say a Non-Romance story engaging in ship teasing is fair game (Minus obviously threats/promises of harm) for attention.

I don't know. Can't speak for other people liking romance and shipping, but it's the heavy lack even in the romance genre of developing couples that makes one eager for more such of the dynamic.

I still think romance gets the shift unfairly cause it was mostly seen back then as just for chicks or as some would say, soy boys.

You can't talk power scaling without bringing in the people who will argue that Superman and Doomguy solo the multiverse.

Powerscaling is more annoying on forums. Shipping is more annoying in real life and has possibly lead to a murder attempt (undertale "cookie incident") so I'm going to vote shipping.

As annoying as powerscalers can be this group tends to keep their shenanigans purely to forum pissing matches and at times pestering a movie's, show's, comic book, anime or manga's creator about shit said creator obviously does not give a rat's ass about and is something they probably forgot eons ago thus gives joke answer responses at times on social media/maybe some interview or Q&A session at some convention somewhere (akira toriyama in a nutshell when dragon ball (z) fans asked him about some ol' dumb shit), lol.

The more "passionate" shippers can be legit insane, which usually happens because some of these fans who is more than likely already mentally unwell get so invested in these fictional characters (and/or celebrities if its for live action shows/movies) that they try to live through them. Steven universe's fandom is a whole ass rabbit hole you can dive into. Then there is the infamous naruto shipping fandom meltdown at the end of the series/when the naruto "the last" movie was first revealed to the point where a lot of these posts was gathered up into a folder called the hall of anal devastation, lol.

Part of it is that authors, like most people, don't have a good sense of scale for things.

The other part is that powerscalers don't understand that you can like dodge and react to things much faster than you are.

There's also the fact that ability does not equal power. Like humans can lift weights far heavier than a wolf, but I still wouldn't bet on a human in a fight against a wolf.

Powerscaling can create extremely dumb and pointless arguments, but shipping culture has caused outright bullying of the people playing the characters.

both are fine but have a toxic side to them

its fun sometimes discussing hypothetical battles between characters and discussing who would win etc

I feel like all the info for Shipping is already in the narrative and all you need to do is watch/read the series and just understadn the characters so theres often no real room for discussion.

Powerscaling because it literally only comes down to whoever the writer is and any other discussion is completely pointless
