Oh he knows, pretty much any Republican politician who says this or "actually, the Confederates were Democrats" know the real history. They just lie about it to manipulate their base.

Ye. About the only one that I would agree probably doesn't know is Trump. But that's more because I don't even think Trump would know his own name if it wasn't on his underwear, let alone have awareness of politics that didn't directly impact him.

The Republican argument about the realignment is that once Democrats lost the ability to control minorities by law they shifted to influencing them through media conditioning and government benefits instead. The GOP often uses various racist politically opportunist comments from president Lyndon B. Johnson to push the claim. (and more recently various racial gaffes from the Clintons and Biden)

Basically they're saying that Dem leaders never changed their beliefs, just their methods, and are still using minorities for the sake of power.

Leave it to a conservative to call promoting policies that benefit your constituents some kind of scheme. It's so different than their usual "get people angry and confused into voting for you" scheme that they assume it has to be sone sort of trick.

Not really. E.g., New Deal Democrats were not conservative.

Before the civil right realignment, both Democrats and Republicans spanned the left-right spectrum, with substantial overlap between the two parties.

This business of Republicans and Democrats having no ideological overlap at all (while Republicans continue to speed off to the right edge of the observable universe) is recent.

I took this question to be "why does the US have a two party system", which is a fair question IMO.

Perhaps the answer is as simple as elections demanding teams, and winner take all elections forcing only two teams to be relevant.

It has changed over time. E.g., right after the civil war, the parties differed mainly along related issues.

The present-day GOP had no legitimate reason to exist, being a criminal syndicate in search of tax cuts for its donor class and willing to burn the nation to the ground to get that done.

However, the Republican party was not always this awful. In fact, they were pretty clearly the good guys in the US civil war.
