I quite liked True Colors, so I am cautiously optimistic.

But it feels like a surefire way to tear the fandom apart if they canonize an ending of one.

for what it's worth, the novel canonized the other ending

but since this one's going into alternate timelines from the trailer, I'm predicting they're going to tie that back to the original LiS ending

Best way to do this would be to have both LiS1 endings, one in each timeline. They have to do two alternate realities anyway, so this is the one case where it wouldn't necessarily be that much more work.

I'm finding it hard to get excited about this, though. Like the trailer opens with Max saying she swore to never use her power again. That means, no matter which ending in LiS is canon, she made a tough decision, let it stand, and learned a valuable lesson. Now she's just... going to use her powers again? To save this rando girl? I'm sure there will be some narrative BS to justify it but right now I'm just wondering why she's willing to risk it.

Also if Chloe isn't in this game in some capacity and this new girl is a love interest I will fucking riot

Max: "I swore I'd never use my power again..."

Me: "No... NO FUCKING WAY! HOLY SHIT! IT'S AN ACTUAL SEQUEL!"

Life is Strange is top tier
LiS: Before the Storm is great, very emotional
LiS 2 is also solid, but doesn't quite nail some of the story beats or the ending
LiS: True Colors is excellent, probably just short of the original. Kinda proved that the powers being integral to both the gameplay and the story is an essential part of what makes the games work

I didn't even know it was Max until the end of the trailer lol

But I'm pretty hyped for this

in the trailer max said the dimensions were the same except new girl is alive/dead. granted that could be early in the adventure and more differences are discovered and tie in to the endings of 1 etc. i also feel like that the dimension you start in would be the 'canon' one but that might depend on how the power works and where the story goes

anyway not sure how excited to be on this. enjoyed LiS1 yeah but ive soured on the ending over the years plus i havent heard much good on the other games. too much room to fuck this up i think

That's not the issue for me. It would be that, in this timeline, Max let Chloe die and refused to use her powers... only to then turn around and use her powers for this girl? As a massive Chloe fanboy, I'd hate to see her diminished like that.

Sacrifice Chloe is 52% soooo.... I'd rather have both and an option for her character to be there (she will probably never be in the trailers and not pop in until the end of Chapter Four, aside from potential flashbacks) than not.

I let her die without a second thought, but I'd still rather have either choice be in play. Maybe the alternate universes will handle it, but that was really not what the preview was indicating and it'd be weird for Max to just not notice.

Also aren't achievements actually a terrible way to gauge who chose what? Don't most people end up reloading for the other ending?

It doesn't help that the LiS endings are so uneven in terms of quality. One is ten minutes of cinematic heartbreak and the other is an inconclusive two minutes of nothing. I bet a lot of people stuck with one ending over the other because of that.

Because I have no trust they will do it well.

This is going to need to have a choice system as robust as Detroit: Become Human, probably even better than that to succeed if that's the route they go.

I can't speak for kev, but my worry is that, by treating both endings as potentially canon, they'll end up losing everything that should make those endings special. Max would go down a completely different path in life in one ending vs the other. The people in her life should be radically different, and not in small ways that'll be easy to write or program.

If they "respect" both endings by, for example, maybe at one point Max gets a phone call from Chloe or a phone call from Warren instead, then to me that trivializes the entirety of LiS. It doesn't matter what ending you pick if Max ends up here no matter what.

Ideally the two timelines actually would be radically different to account for each ending, but I don't for a second think they'll put the effort into doing that. It'll be like the True Colors DLC, Wavelengths, where it asks you which ending you got in LiS and the only thing it changes are a few offhand comments. And that's fine for Steph, she wasn't even in Arcadia Bay at the time. It just wouldn't work for Max imo

Like you could have the alternate dimensions cover both possibilities, but Max should still be aware of which one she was living in before that. It sounds like that is exactly what they want to avoid.

Would be interesting if there were two different story paths, and you chose Bay or Bae at the start of the game. And each of those story paths went down the same route but in remarkably different ways for the reasons Roba already said. Like... with the Bay ending, Max probably stays in Arcadia Bay, graduates school, and has a successful, but somewhat hollow, life. With the Bae ending, she and Chloe go on a road trip and she probably gets a following on Instagram with all her cool photographs, and by the time of this game, she and Chloe are engaged and preparing for their wedding. If she's in the same place either way, just with different dialogue and relationships (Chloe vs. a different significant other)... it could work, but that would be a MASSIVE undertaking. It's like two entirely different stories that only have some threads in common.

So having two different places she's at in life won't work. I'd think people will be pissed off no matter what. They can't simply make one ending canon when people are so divided over it. That said, I'd think Max would have chosen the Bae ending in that moment. Even if it's not the right thing to do, it's what her heart was set on. And that was what made that ending so compelling: Do you go with what's right, with what Chloe is telling you to do, or do you go with your heart?

I don't expect this game to be a winner. LIS1 was simply something that shouldn't have a sequel, and it's why they did a prequel and then two games with other protagonists set in the same universe. Coming back here is asking for trouble.

While I agree that doing this right would be difficult, I don't assume that they won't do so. I think in an ideal scenario, we would see drastically different timelines side by side, but I think that's easily possible. They've shown their ability to handle a single game taking place over multiple locations with entirely different casts of supporting characters in LiS 2, so I don't see why they couldn't do the same here. They also seemed to understand the implications of an alternate timeline In LiS1 Ep. 3, so I can't imagine they'd write the ending of LiS1 as a minor life change.
