Welcome to the all digital future, where you'll pay every month to prop up a bunch of people you hate for pure convenience. And you'll continue to pay even more, and love it
I think you mean the future, just in general. Or rather, the present.

Bills, rent, mortgage, payments... Streaming subscriptions are really nothing new.

I keep my music in my own files, fuck spotify.
I have literally never seen a good reason to use Spotify

Even if I need to stream some music, I'll just use YouTube (not even "YouTube Music", I mean plain ol' YouTube)

I rip my music for free with library cds. Suckers!
I wonder if a good chunk of what I listen to is in the library catalogs.

The more annoying thing would be managing the music on my phone. I cannot do cardio at the gym without music.

I do find it funny whenever there are topics about streaming services how many people brag that they dont use them

good thing instead of having access to literally any song ever made I limit myself to whats available at the local library!

like I buy a ton of music, I have a combined 1500+ CDs and records but I still subscribe to streaming services because A) Im not tryna maintain terabytes of music files and B) I want to be able to listen to whatever I want, whenever I want

I mean, that's valid if you listen to that much. But I'm personally not listening to TBs of music and there's myriad free ways to discover new artists.

I highly doubt most people listen to even 100gb of music total, let alone TBs of it.

Whenever I've tried to use it they didn't seem to. Only select songs available and as Daki mentioned on a shuffle system.

Like when I showed my friend Sleep Token, he looked them up on his phone's Spotify and there was only 5ish songs there (think it was mostly singles from the most recent album) and they've made 3 full albums.
It looks like there are three albums and a few various instrumental albums on Spotify right now for Sleep Token. Unless there are legal issues with a song, I've found Spotify generally has everything.

If you want keep paying that fine. And whether you use it or not you're paying for the library bud. Might as well make good use of it.

Ok, I'm on it now. I think I know the previous mistake. When you look it up without actually selecting the band it gives random songs and recommendations for other bands. I clicked on an album and couldn't select any particular song, I just hit play and the first song it played is like #8 on the album. I see a list of the song titles on the album, however I can't click on them or anything. Just the play/pause button and the shuffle symbol next to it, which when I click on that says "Want to play songs in any order? Get Premium to play any song, any time"

So you have to get premium to deactivate the shuffle feature and to actually choose which song you want to listen to off the album apparently. That's pretty ass. I scrolled down on the page and it's just a clip and a tab for concerts.

First song just ended, immediately played 3 ads. While Youtube does have ads, I can often go 2-3 songs in a row without them throwing new ads in.

Next song played, I clicked the skip button just to see what would happen. A message pops up saying "you can skip 6 songs within an hour", the first song it skipped to was from the same album, the next song it skipped to was from a different album. What if I really just wanna listen to the same album on repeat (which is an actual habit of mine, especially with this band's most recent album, Take Me Back To Eden)?

This is the least user-friendly music app I've ever experienced.

I knew subscription services were going to be a joke 15 years ago.

Now, pay what, 20 for youtube, 120 for amazon prime, 12 for spotify, 10 for hulu (with ads), 7 for netflix (with ads).... etc.

It's awesome that everything in life is now subscription based. Because everyone can afford it. It's amazing. Happy we live in this time.

I mean, it's dumb greedy bullshit, but Apple and Google aren't exactly bastions of pro-consumer sentiment either. Pick a streaming service, but don't try to attach morals to it.

Spotify has a ton of music and I've been using it for years, so I'm sticking with it until they do something extremely horrible.

It really doesn't work though because not enough people will ever vote with their wallet. These are global corporations that have embedded themselves into our everyday lives. You're not going to get the world to agree on a protest over $1 price increases. The average person sees prices go up and just pays more. That's unfortunately how it is. The invisible hand of capitalism isn't going to course correct the economy on its own unless it literally collapses.

apple is at least paying artists 2.5x as much as Spotify and they havent cut off smaller artists from royalties entirely

switching streaming services to apple or tidal is like, the single lowest effort thing you can do to support artists you like

The most expensive I ever remember buying was $20 for a two-disc set. Most expensive for a single disc was $18. Of course, that was this century. I dunno if they were more expensive in the 90's or if they were just cheaper where I used to get them (Walmart/Target).

Most of the time they were less than 20, but for some reason, CDs that werent a new release were a bit more expensive. I remember in 1999 getting the sugar ray album at specs and it was 22. It was for my 7th grade clase gift exchange. Adjusted for inflation thats probably close to 40 in todays money. Hence why spotify isnt a good deal for musicians.

but you use Spotify

with almost no effort you could be using a platform that A) pays artists significantly better and B) isnt actively working towards paying them even less and C) pays all artists instead of just ones that reach some arbitrary threshold

and the services are functionally identical

Spotify is objectively, quantitatively worse than (most) other streaming services but you defend it with actually all corporations are bad type shit.

EDIT: should also note that apple and tidal have lossless audio so those services are actually quantitatively better

This is a weird interpretation of my thoroughly detailed post which you largely disregarded for a single statement explaining why I find Spotify so shitty and anti-user friendly. Literally the only way to use it in any way other than what they force upon you is to pay for it. Fuck them for that business model, they are essentially telling consumers to pay them or go fuck off, and so I choose to fuck off cause I refuse to pay for some Joe Rogan worshipping anti-user music app.
