at least nowadays everyone has a phone so you have something to do while youre sitting there waiting for them to run the numbers or some shit

so fucking stupid that this process is still basically mandatory for a new car

the worst part about buying a car is that if you don't haggle, you're gonna get hosed. The dealership expects people to haggle. The hagglers think they're getting some sort of huge deal, when the dealership is still coming out ahead, so this just makes it shittier for everybody else just trying to buy a car.

I was at a local video game store the other day and I asked the guy if he had a USB rock band guitar. He did, and he wanted $100 for it. Now, first thing I did when i left is went to ebay and 50-75+ shipping is what they seem to be going for. But the man expects the haggle. Maybe I could have gotten it for 50 or 75 if I tried, but fuck that, he gets no sale.

Man, few years ago when I bought my house my mom kept asking me I wanted to just drive around neighborhoods I liked and see if houses were for sale.

Then recently when I bought my new truck was like "How do you know what you want if you don't go to dealerships and look?!" Lol

But yeah, 2 professions that will probably go away in years to come.

i read an article recently about, among archer things, how dealerships are an extremely powerful lobbying group and theyve gotten a lot of laws to be written specifically to protect themselves

guy said hed knock an extra $1000 off the white car if we took and my wife was like nah $2k isnt enough to take the white car smh

EDIT: to be clear I didnt want a white car either but I dont $2000 care about it

My last dealer experience wasn't too bad, We got a brand new, loaded Durango R/T in 2020 for right at $50K I think. But they beat us up in the financing office, I thought I was waving most of the "bloat" they try to tack on but he snuck in a few things. When I look back at how everything played out he was definitely shifty about how he was selling things.

However, I ended up doing well in the end by buying the 10 oil change package. Right after the pandemic everything shot up in price and I definitely made my money back on that.

I didn't haggle on the price for my current car because I knew the BB value walking in the door. I knew the posted price was just right for what the car I was interested in was. Rather what I did was make sure they covered certain things pro bono and gave me the best possible warranty at a steep discount.

It was actually a pretty good deal, the warranty has come through for me on several occasions (much to my surprise, honestly).

Not brand new zero owner cars, but they do have plenty of 2023-2024 models.

Carmax and Carvana vehicles cost like 1-2k more than you could get the same car for at a traditional dealership but IMO that shits worth it because theres no surprises or wasted time. Price you see is what you pay. Simple as that.

I bought my current car through Carvana. Was sitting in my recliner rocking my daughter to sleep and pulled up the app, found the car I wanted, and in less than 15 minutes I had it ordered, loan approved, and set for delivery in my driveway a few days later.

They have a seven day no questions asked return policy too so you can schedule a complete inspection while waiting on delivery to make sure its not a piece of shit.

I probably wont ever buy from a traditional dealership again - havent ever spent less than six hours in one and I always leave feeling like I got a shitty deal.

I managed to get a 2017 Ford Focus for $8500 back in November, which is about $1000 more than what I paid for my 1998 Toyota Corolla in 2006, so I guess that isn't too bad?

This is a fair point. All of the new cars Ive ever bought were from a Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep/RAM dealer and a Kia/Nissan dealer lol

All of those brands will approve anyone with a pulse to get into a car.

Maybe when I get rich enough Ill check out the Mercedes dealer one day

My best friend drives a Passat he got new in 2018 and said that was the best dealer experience hed had so maybe its just German brands in general are better dealership experiences

Currently on my second Mercedes and third German car overall. So much better to deal with.

Not sure about elsewhere but the dealership near me hires salesmen that either have business school backgrounds, or former high level athletes who are trained to deal with the public.

btw Im totally thrilled to be driving a minivan again. Minivans rule

i drove one all through my 20s bc my job provided me with one for work and personal use. It was so damn convenient for road trips, moving furniture, etc

we got an SUV as a compromise when I quit that job and my wife didnt want me driving a minivan, but now with 2 kids and the strollers and all the shit you have to carry around with 2 kids it just makes sense

I'm assuming this is a US exclusive thing. I'm the assistant manager of a real estate office in Canada and we're expanding, not shrinking. Not to mention blue hairs aren't going to buy anything if ROB the Robot is trying to sell it to them.

You really think that companies are just going to let some yahoo test drive their cars without someone there? Lawsuits being filed means very little if they don't go anywhere.

I think judging by your post language that you think AI is quite a bit further along than it actually is. It's getting there, but having played with several of them, if you tried to get them to sell expensive shit it wouldn't work worth shit. They can't even figure out knock knock jokes yet.

I briefly worked in cars and I know how to get the best possible deal.

  1. If you are not ready to take the car home today, dont run the numbers. Dealerships love same day pickups. Only get serious when you are 100% ready.
  2. Come in with a price in mind for the car you want. Give them your card and say if they can hit the number, its an automatic buy. If they come back and say they really cant hit the number, then you know they cant.
  3. Get a definitive amount to the cent of what you need to come in with when you pick up the car. A common scam is you pay the first month of the car, and then when you pick it up they try to explain that you pay the first month now, even though you already did.
This at least was what I observed when working there. This is what seemed to have the most success for customers. This is all new car sales btw

They set up customers and visits and get it listed on websites and such. Like imagine if eBay fees were a person and thats what they do essentially is be the platform that exposes you to a wider market. But you can sell without one easily and stick with just the real estate lawyer instead and keep what wouldve been the real estate agents commission.

In this day and age thats tens of thousands of dollars extra in your pocket instead of the agent at these home prices. Itll be taxed surely but still. Like selling a house for 400k means the commission for an agent is 20k at the average rate of 5 percent, so youre losing that much for them to handle the sale.

I'm buying a Toyota this week. They're pretty much trying to follow Tesla's lead regarding how they sell and their price transparency. Even knowing the final out the door price and not paying any markups nor fees other than a relatively small doc fee, and getting a much better trade in value than other dealerships were offering, it still feels like I'm getting a bad deal due to my previous experiences with dealerships.

I miss the mid-2010s where if you had decent credit you could go lease a brand new car for like $200-250 a month with nothing down.

Nothing too fancy of course but shit even a basic ass car like a Kia Rio will be $350+ a month with money down these days.

I've bought 2 cars from different companies/dealers in the last year and the common denominator between the two was that the financing office is where you get shafted the hardest. You'll have a car at a price you're fine with and then you go in thinking you'll sign the papers and they hand you a laptop that asks you about your driving habits and then they hard sell you on upgrades or packages using your own answers against you ("you said you drive on gravel sometimes so you definitely need our protective coating, wouldn't want your paint dinged would you?")

If you can get past that part it's not bad at all imo at least compared to like 10+ years ago.

Went to the dealership because they were advertising a $99/month lease on their website. Texted with the sales person to make sure it was available.

Test drove it, told them I'd take it. They showed me the numbers, minimal fees. They ran credit, paid the first month, tax, title etc on a credit card for the points, they didn't charge a fee for that. Out of there in 3 hours.

Bought my wife's car at a no haggle dealership. Got a good deal on it. They were up front and honest - car had been stolen and was recovered, no damage.
We test drove it twice and then bought it. Paperwork still took a couple of hours, but there was absolutely no pressure and no feelings of being shafted.

I've read about reliability issues that would make me uncomfortable with buying an older used model, especially one with 67k miles in just a couple years

also the new purchase qualifies for a $7500 credit that comes off the MSRP. there's smaller credit on used vehicles but there are more stipulations on qualifying for that one
