Bringing it up because:
  • I have a few ideas floating around in my head for other fictional characters, and for various RPG systems, at that, and can possibly do a periodic topic about it (including nominations)
  • TTYD is re-releasing nowabouts
  • I'm interested in other opinions, or if certain people multi class, and how screwy an interpretation can get.

For example -in D&D 5E I would argue that Gordon Ramsay is a College of Swords Bard, with his performance put into culinary. He's got Vicious Mockery down pat, you idiot sandwich, and he has quite the proficiency with cutlery.

So, Mario. I dont need to give a background on him to you, I hope, but for future ones or more obscure picks I will- what tabletop class would Mario be? Be as loose or as rigid as you want- and if you use an odd system, consider that.

Since we're starting off as basic as it gets, I'm going to spoiler my own opinion- feel free to argue or posit your own thoughts.
Mario is a D&D 3.5e Rogue. Willing to risk life and limb for collectibles, strangely good acrobatics despite his build, yet not the greatest if he isn't surprise-attacking something, and way, way too much proficiency in Use Magic Item. If he weren't so acrobatic, I might even consider him a 5e Artificer.

Mario is a 3.5e Enlightened Fist from the Sorcerer Side

Basically a monk (punches and jumping/acrobatics-- hammer could be a monk weapon) that casts spells (power ups)

I reckon platformer Mario could get away with being a poorly optimised 5e Echo Knight Fighter that's specced into unarmed combat, given his many lives. I also think being a Fighter fits for him being generally considered the boring one.

He's a Monk that secretly wants to be a Druid. He enjoys Wild Shaping into raccoon, tanuki, cats, frogs, etc. but cannot do it innately.

He's a Sorcerer using Alter Self more than wild shaping

See, I wouldn't call him a sorcerer at all (except maybe in Smash) because no innate supernatural things, it's all powerups.

Power ups or spell components??? (I know thats a wizard thing)

I mean I guess you could say he's a rogue with Use Magic Device. But it's easier to just Use Magic Device by being a Sorcerer with the spell on your spell list anyway.

But yeah between Smash and Mario RPG, and heck the item storage in other games, I'm not sure putting it all into Use Magic Device is fully accurate.

Smash Mario is a Bright Wizard from Warhammer Fantasy. He's just hallucinating all the mushrooms and swordsmen and ambulatory animals from getting too close to the Flame.

Gestalt of some sort (3.5 variant rule that lets you pick two classes). Highly athletic class, Monk is a good one, Druid also comes to mind (power from nature-themed items, flowers/mushroom/leaves) that give animal-themed boosts. Fireballs. Both classes give lots of utility, mobility, powers, but not durability (usually killed in 1-2 hits).

Giving it a Necromancy bump for the overnight. If I continue this tomorrow, perhaps I'll pick a literary character next.

Way of the Four Elements monk (D&D5).
Base monk gets bonuses to jumping and movement, which obviously plays into Mario's strengths. Flavour his main unarmed attacks as jumping on the enemy, then Flurry of Blows can be the hammer (based on the DK/Smash animations). Patient Defense could maybe be a shoddy invincibility star.

Four Elements gets you Fang of the Fire Snake and Blade of Rime for Fire/Ice flowers and Ride the Wind for Tanooki Mario.
