Kind of.

But then Jackson operated in a different climate from his predecessors, who you could only have seen live.

It is what it is.

I know shes popular, but obviously she isnt MJ level when Thriller was released. Streaming makes it a lot easier to listen to artists now

What exactly is the tweet arguing?

Anyway I like sza, her chorus was the only part I liked of that Black Panther song with the whiny ass voice, kendrick lamar I think.

Its arguing that the way we do records now is much different than before streaming, which is true.

certain records are just much easier to break now with the new rules, even if its still a great accomplishment

I mean, you could very well argue that with the market much more crowded now, and people having access to the whole of music history at their fingertip, it's actually a greater achievement to stay at the top for that long.

Sure, it's easier for people to access your music, but it's equally easy for them to access all other music, while having recommendations pushed at them for good measure.

nahhhh I heavily disagree

Advertising and marketing, as well as accessibility and how numbers are counted is just so much different now. Its much easier to just blow up because you get popular on tiktok or something now.

But when you have people blowing up on Tiktok every week, to stay at the top for any length of time becomes difficult, no?

Oh they're arguing it's easier, not more difficult? See I thought it was the other way around, saying that things are much more difficult now. Like how Thriller held the record for highest selling album of all time, which made sense back then when you absolutely had to buy the music to listen to it rather than just go on youtube for free.

It's really both. The floor is way more accessible now. Way easier to get your music out there and even get respectable numbers on it, but the ceiling is also way higher to get to and stay at the top.

SZA album is good. But its streaming numbers are being carried by the facts it has the best RnB song in at LEAST 15 years on it.

Yall not knowing who Sza is at all tells me yall arent very attached to black culture or people.

When you cement yourself as a popular artist with a fanbase, not really. Fans will actively do their best to manipulate streaming numbers to make their favorites stay on top longer, and it doesnt even cost more money.

To do anything remotely the same for Thriller you wouldve had to actually buy multiple copies

Record companies used to do that back in the day.

The SZA album got stellar reviews across the board, and won a ton of awards, so I'm inclined to think this is more a case of a quality product outlasting fan fads.

I mean I find a lot of new artists even though I do use ad block and don't watch TV. I don't need advertisers to tell me what I'm interested in. Checked her out due to curiosity after this, doesn't seem bad but what I heard wasn't for me.

I wasn't familiar with this artist either, but that's still one hell of a feat regardless.

I dunno if I really agree with the tweet in the OP. What can be said about those figures is definitely different, but the talent needed to reach that point in the first place is untouchable.

I still think Billboard needs to separate records from the streaming era.. people standing up, going to a record store, and buying an album, is not the same as just lifting a finger to play a song. The demand was different back then.

Dawg your hiphop takes in the other topic were so bad that the only person who could outdo them was scotty.

I know who SZA is and have heard some of her songs, but I dont actively listen to her. And black culture as a whole extends far beyond rnb billboard numbers. I quite literally have POC friends that dont listen to SZA.

I think it becomes pointless to compare eras where music consumption is so different.

Scott Joplin sold over a million copies of the sheet music for Maple Leaf Rag. Is that a bigger achievement than Thriller? I couldn't say.
